Author Cameron D. James on Why Book Covers Are Important

I love book covers... when they’re nice. A lot of other times I’m a bit iffy on them.

They say “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but, really, we do that a lot. We may not completely judge the content of the book, but the cover certainly affects our decision to read the back cover or not. An amazingly thrilling book with a sucky cover will likely get picked up and looked at less than an adequate book with an awesome cover. And this is even more true with ebooks since we just have the little graphic on the screen and not an actual physical book on a shelf in front of us. There’s a lot less motivation to look at a book with sucky cover art.

I was concerned about this when Autumn Fire was sent to the cover artist. I don’t know if you’ve checked out m/m romance covers lately, but a lot of them feature either the faces or upper torsos of two men, floating in the clouds and staring off into the distance, with some scenery beneath them. Snore...

Thankfully, my publisher gives authors some input into cover design. I pointed them toward a few outstanding m/m romance covers. I’m drawn to the ones that are a bit more stunning in their design – a little simpler and uncluttered, with a clear picture of a goodlooking man, and no body-less heads floating in clouds.

I was thrilled when the cover art for Autumn Fire came my way! I absolutely love it! The artist, Petra K., did a phenomenal job. Dustin, the character on the cover, is the central image; the colors create that autumn feel; and the overall effect is uncluttered, stunning, and bright.

Hopefully, it’ll be a cover that encourages people to click on it to read the description. I think the insides are great and it’s wonderful to have a cover that I feel matches!

Author Bio:

When Cameron D James isn’t writing gay erotic romance, he can be found studying for his Masters, working in his dull office job, or reading five books at once. But, really, you’re most likely to find him writing. He loves crafting hot, sexy, sweaty, throbbing scenes, interwoven with lust and deep emotions for an orgasmic whole. He writes out of a love of characters, wherever those characters may lead.

Dustin likes the closet. It’s warm, comfy, and dark. Who needs to be out when you can get all the anonymous sex you want via the internet? And, besides, coming out is messy and gets you nowhere—certainly not a relationship. Real gay love is fiction.

When Dustin meets CollegeJock22 for a quick blow-and-go in the university library men’s room, everything he thought he knew crumbles. He can’t get that man out of his head and will do almost anything to have him. The only problem? CollegeJock22 is even more in the closet than Dustin. He’s in so deep he can’t even see the crack of light under the door.

  1. Thanks for hosting me!

There have been times in the past where I have picked up books solely based on cover art -- and they ended up being amazing! I've also picked up a couple others solely based on cover art that turned out terrible... Either way you look at it, cover art does influence a lot of people!
