'David's Selfie' by Daisy Harris

Blurb:

When David, a single father, vows to get laid just once before the year ends, he doesn’t figure on losing his cell phone—and with it one very revealing picture. Lucky for him, his phone is found by a disarmingly handsome man who might be perfect for the kind of casual Christmas fling David is after.

Go-go dancer Craig never would have guessed that the guy with the cute cock shot would turn out to be a doctor. Or that he’d find himself lying about his night job and worrying David will find out the truth. To complicate matters, each of their hook-ups requires days of planning. Yet before he knows it, Craig has a new boyfriend, and possibly a whole new family.

David’s ready to dive head-first into something new, but if Craig’s going to commit, he’ll need to come clean about his job, his past, and—most of all—the naughty picture that drew him to David in the first place.

Warning: Call your doctor if after six hours you still can’t get the grin off your face.

Read an excerpt:
“Listen, I can’t take you to my place—”
“Yeah, I get it. Because you have a kid.”
“Well, if she was asleep, maybe it would be okay...” That was stretching the truth, but David didn’t want Craig feeling offended. “My sister-in-law is there and...”
“No. I get it.” Craig’s hand fisted on top of the car, but it seemed more in frustration than anger.
“I can give you a ride home...” God, David wished he could kiss Craig. He could get off for weeks on the memory.
“Okay.” Craig’s answer was measured, his eyes burning. He slid into the passenger seat.
David followed, but before he could get the key into the ignition, Craig caught his wrist and dragged him closer.
There was only a second of hesitation, the air ripe between them in the dark car, and Craig’s lips were on David’s. Firm, but softening. Savory from their dinner, and scratchy with stubble.

David palmed Craig’s arms, then his chest. Every part of him was strong and thick, smelling of menthol and musk.
Craig cupped the base of David’s skull. “Let’s park somewhere.”
Distracted by unbuttoning Craig’s shirt, David took a few seconds to process Craig’s words. “We are parked.” He bit his way down Craig’s neck. Knowing the name of each muscle didn’t diminish the magic of feeling strength under skin.
Craig urged David away. “I mean, at a park or something.”
“Where?” David twisted to get back into his seat. He’d fooled around with guys in college. Boys, really. But Craig was a man. Something he had fantasized about but never had. He couldn’t wait to feel under Craig’s clothes.
“Arboretum? Or maybe down by the water.” Craig’s shirt was unbuttoned to reveal a chest with a smattering of finely clipped hair.
“Yeah. Okay.” As David’s brain unscrambled, he thought of a stretch of road that would be deserted. Granted, they’d probably have to share the space with the occasional drug dealer, but David didn’t care so long as he tasted more of Craig’s skin.
They drove in silence. David was breathing hard, and he couldn’t slow his heartbeat. For once he didn’t worry about whether he’d brought his inhaler. Lightheaded, jittery and more excited than he could remember being in ages, David drew the car to a stop and put it in park.
“Fuck.” Craig reached across again, grabbing a fistful of David’s hair and hauling him into a kiss.

Author Bio:

Born into the psychedelic wonder that was the 70s, Daisy Harris has had an interesting life so far. She’s been to Catholic school and Ramones concerts; danced to MC Hammer and Lady Gaga; and been a hair’s breadth from shipwreck twice. (Three times, if you count sea kayaks!)

As far as Daisy’s concerned, the best things in life happen by accident. Though she’s gotten better at planning over the years, she still writes, lives and plays by the seat of her pants. Her books are a happy mix of romantic comedies and coming of age stories, more often than not, inspired by the great films of the 1980s.

Daisy lives in Seattle in a house full of dogs and children. When she’s not writing gay romance, she can be found experimenting with new ways to cook kale.

'Ghosts of Grace Cottage' by Carolyn Wren

Ghosts of Grace Cottage
by Carolyn Wren

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Eloisa Waters is creating a new life for herself. After travelling for twelve months, she comes home at Christmas, purchasing a small country cottage in a sleepy English village, despite the fact its previous owner was a recluse, the original owner was supposedly a witch, and it’s now rumored to be haunted!
On the first night in her new home, sensual erotic dreams surprise and delight her. Only these aren’t dreams. The rumors are true. Two handsome Regency ghosts inhabit the cottage, becoming corporeal at night, trapped by a curse, compelled to satisfy every desire of the new owner.
Elly begins to fall in love with Anton and Phillipe, her charming ghostly lovers. But is there more? Can the curse be broken? Or does Elly risk her own soul. As Christmas approaches, and memories surface, how will Elly choose? How can she possibly leave behind the Ghosts of Grace Cottage?
Read an excerpt:
“Est-elle blesse!”
“Peut-être s’est-elle cognée sa tête?”
Elly moaned. “I’m not hurt, and I didn’t hit my head. Can you speak more slowly and in English? My French skills deteriorate when I’m in pain.”
“Pardon…sorry, English. You frightened us.”
Her eyes snapped open. “I frightened you?” She scrambled backwards. “You...” She swallowed. “You’re…dead!”
She hadn’t imagined it. Two men knelt on the floor beside her. Two truly gorgeous men. One blond and one dark-haired, they were dressed in some sort of period costumes. Regency if she had to take a guess. It appeared as if they were standing behind a film of gossamer thin material, giving them an unusual translucent look.
“Eloisa, please….” the blond man said.
Elly scrambled backward a few more feet. “How do you know my name?”
“You talk to yourself,” he replied with an elegant, one-shouldered shrug.
“Oh, right, yes I do, but that doesn’t excuse the fact you’re dead.”
The dark haired man, who was drop-dead gorgeous, no pun intended, raised his hands in a gesture of surrender. “Eloisa, yes, you are correct. We mean you no harm. We are always here. You are seeing us now because you needed to.”
Having the dead theory confirmed, snapped Elly out of her shock. “Ghosts don’t exist.”
A hint of a smile tilted the blond man’s mouth. “I thought that too until I became one.”
“What do you mean I’m only seeing you now because I need to? What do you mean you’re here for me?” Am I repeating myself?
“It is the curse.”
“I’m cursed?” Her words came out as a high pitched squeak.
“No, we are.”
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
I was born in England. My parents loved to travel as my dad spent many years in the navy. By the time I reached the age of 12 we had traveled pretty much around the world on cruise ships.
This sounds fun and exciting unless like me you can get sea sick sitting in a bathtub. Lets just say boats do not feature highly in my books.
I still love to travel, but I use planes. All of my life I have written stories in my head. I would rewrite and add characters to TV shows, edit and change novels I was reading, invent scenarios and scenes to amuse myself on long journeys. But strangely I never wrote any of them down. About three years ago I woke up with a scene so clear in my head I knew I had to put it down on paper. Now, what should I do with this one page of prose? I know, I will email it to some friends. The friends approved, in fact they asked what book it was from. I shyly admitted it was my own work and the reaction was immediate...please write the next bit! I did and I have not stopped writing since.
Review of '2014 Summer Collection Romance Anthology'
Five complete sweet to sensual stories from five multi-talented authors in settings to make any summer occasion more special. Included are:
Meet Me In Seattle by Markee Anderson
Madysen Duke has been coerced to participate in a reality show with her teacher friends. But little does she know, her high school flame is also along for the ride, with intentions much different from hers. Even though she's out for the money, he's trying to thwart whatever crime is happening right before their eyes.
Arrow Through The Heart by Stephanie Burkhart
Summer vacation and the Fourth of July brings Ella to New Hampshire while participating in a tennis competition. Logan is an innkeeper's son who bumps into Ella and invites her for an ice cream. Attraction flares and they enjoy spending time together, but each has their own plans for their life. Then disaster strikes Ella. Can a summer attraction truly become a lasting relationship?
Taking Liberty by Gerald Costlow
Liberty "Libby" Bell is a waitress at a roadside diner, trying to hide from an abusive ex-boyfriend who refuses to leave her alone. She strikes up a romance with Roger, a hunky local fireman, and seems to be getting her life back into gear. Then her ex-boyfriend tracks her down.
Will she be forced to leave Roger and run away again, or see the ex- boyfriend and risk a violent confrontation?
And if that isn't enough to handle, suddenly there's a serial killer in their midst.
Marcy’s Struggle by Larry Hammersley
Marcy Mason is in her final year of graduate school, pursuing a PhD in chemistry. She has brains and looks, but struggles in the romance department. She met Ross Franklin in undergraduate school when she was a senior; he was a freshman and second-string quarterback. Her problem – she was hung up on Leroy Doyle at the time.
Leroy is married and moved away, but Ross, now star quarterback, isn't convinced she’s over Leroy. When Leroy arrives on campus to give a lecture, Marcy must make all the arrangements. After contact with Leroy, Marcy admits to what she’s known all along—she’s over Leroy and wants Ross in her life. Can she convince Ross to look past their different backgrounds and give love a chance?
The Garden by Jory Sherman
Summer brings forth fresh vegetables in the garden and with them, the ultimate fight against insects and wild critters to protect those vegetables. Harvey enjoys his garden, especially the corn – watching it grow, providing food for his beloved wife Ruth. Then, something unusual happens in the garden and his corn begins to disappear.
Read an excerpt:
From Meet Me in Seattle:
Madysen sighed and picked up more books. "How much is this going to cost me?"
"Nothing. You could even make money doing this. It'll only take a week of our time and voila, instant rich women." Iris threw her hands into the air and laughed, showing off her dimples.
Madysen wished she had dimples and that her skin was as smooth and pink as Iris' skin. With Iris' wild red hair, the woman actually glowed all the time. But instead, Madysen had to settle for her long wavy brunette hair and freckled skin. She wasn't ugly, but bright green eyes seemed to turn the men away for some reason. Or maybe it was her rail-thin figure. Or maybe Mac had dumped her for that college co-ed for some other reason. It certainly wasn't for the young girl's brains.
Madysen had to stick to the conversation instead of dwelling in the past. "Who else will be there tonight?"
"Just the Cast-Off Club. And maybe my brother."
Madysen rolled her eyes. "You aren't going to try to fix me up with Quentin again, are you?"
"Ah, come on," Iris said, and nudged Madysen with her elbow. "He's fun and employed. What else could you ask for?"
**My thoughts**
This book is perfect for those who like a little suspense and a dash of romance in their short stories.
Of the five in this book, the first one, Meet Me in Seattle, definitely kept my attention the most, at least for the first two-thirds of it. There was a lot of action in it that kept it moving. The last one, The Garden, was definitely my favorite one, because it had a great message.
All five of these stories are unique and not quite what I was expecting when I agreed to review this book. Romances are rapid and people aren't always what they seem. In some ways, they would be more interesting if they could be fleshed out into longer stories. It isn't one that I am going to rush back to reread, but was an interesting read over the weekend and a change of pace from the mainstream.
'The Gladiator's Bride' by Nhys Glover
The Gladiator’s Bride
by Nhys Glover
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Crippled by shyness, shunned for being not-right-in-the-head, gifted artist and Roman noblewoman, Marcia Mica, has only two people in the world who truly love her – her teacher, Daedalus, and her childhood friend, Asterion, both slaves in her father’s household. But when forbidden love blooms between the unlikely friends, only disaster can come of it. That disaster leaves Marcia horribly scarred and Asterion sold into the arena as a gladiator.

Years later, Daedalus brings a broken Marcia to Britannia, and Sabrina, the healer who saved his life when he was a boy, works miracles on the scarred girl. However, not all scars are physical and those Sabrina has no ability to heal.

When Sabrina and Marcia are kidnapped by a Celtic leader bent on revenge, Asterion must depend on the dreams of a Celtic Seer to find the love of his life and help foil a revolt that threatens the fragile peace in Roman Britannia. But even if he and his friends succeed, can scars that are more than just physical ever really be healed and can those whose lives are owned by others ever truly be free to follow their hearts?

Read an excerpt:
She launched herself at him so fast that he again dropped the sack of flour. Her tightly closed lips butted against his in a fiercely innocent kiss. It smashed her teeth into his, cutting his lip, and it felt nothing like the soft, seductive caresses the Widow gave him.

But it was like putting a naked flame to tinder. Like a lightning strike to a tree. The very fact that her lips were sealed to his blew every thought from his head and brought him to instant, painful attention. Blood pounded in his ears, his legs grew weak. Air evaporated from his lungs.

Fighting for control, he pushed her away. ‘What are you doing? Stop!’

‘You don’t have to go to her. If kissing is what you want, I can give you that. You don’t have to go to her!’

‘Yes I do!’

‘Why? Aren’t I good enough for you?’

He grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her in fury. His head felt ready to explode.

‘I need more than kisses! Don’t you get it? We aren’t children anymore. And I need more than friendship and kisses. And you can’t give me what I need. You’re the little mistress and I’m the slave. They’d cut off my balls if I so much as looked at you the wrong way!’

Review of 'Falling Star' by Laura DeLuca

FallingStarBanner

FallingStarEbookDrew DiPalma feels like he's living a lie. He's had it with his Hollywood persona, the high-maintenance women, and his sleazy agent. To escape the madness, he flees to a tourist town he'd often visited as a child. He never expected to find love on that little island. Then he stumbles upon Lainey alone on the swing set of a deserted beach.

**My thoughts**

There are so many books out right now about "normal" people finding romance with big name celebrities, yet I find myself diving into them again and again. Don't we all have that fantasy from time to time? It's even more unlikely that finding that true soulmate, but it is fun to dream.

I like Lainey because I can relate to many parts of her personality. She has been through hell, yet manages to keep picking herself up and moving forward. She is working in a job that may not be her top choice for career, but it is working for now. She is strong and beautiful, yet finds herself feeling self-conscious and unaware of all of her amazing gifts. It's one thing for her girlfriends to tell her how wonderful she is, and something completely different for a new hottie to do the same. She also wants to trust people and expects people to be trustworthy. I also see a lot of the author in this character, from the bits I have gathered from reading all of her books.

Drew is understandably tired of the Hollywood life. He doesn't fit into the phony side of LA and misses leading a "normal" life. He also seeks true happiness in romance. I don't like that he lies to Lainey for so long, especially when he has his chance time and time again to tell her the truth. Yet, I want to forgive him at the same time, because he is so wonderful.

As often happens with authors, each subsequent book of hers gets better and better. I have been a fan of DeLuca's since I read her musicals series. I see growth in her character and plot development and descriptions of places and situations. In this book, I felt even more drawn into the story and didn't want to put down the Kindle. It flowed well and was a great escape for a few hours. It's also a slightly different path for her to take, and one that I am looking forward to continuing to read as the series continues.
