'His Perfect Game' by Jenn Langston Super Book Blast!

His Perfect Game
by Jenn Langston

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Greyson Thorpe, Viscount Merrick, wants respectability above all else. Knowing the fastest way to achieve that state comes through marriage, he challenges Hammond Everett, the Duke of Donetic to a card game. After winning the match, the duke agrees to exchange his daughter’s hand in marriage for the forgiveness of his debts.
Willimena Abigail Everett had no desire to marry after experiencing the violent nature of men at her father’s hand. When Viscount Merrick arrives, she has no choice other than to obey her father and marry him. Will she be able to set aside her previous beliefs about men and judge her husband by his own merits?
After obtaining good social standing, Greyson sends his bride to the country; however, he finds himself missing her. Following her to the estate, he discovers she had been living a double life. Will he discover her secrets and control his burning desire for her at the same time?
Read an excerpt:
“The weather is quite gloomy,” Lord Merrick commented.
Abigail nodded. His generic observation would have been humorous had she not been so nervous about what she had to do. “This situation is unorthodox, is it not?”
“Yes.” His eyes met hers and captured her attention.
Never in her life had someone been so focused on her. She was seen by many, but noticed by none. His awareness of her brought out a longing she thought she’d left in the past. She wanted to be her own person, someone worthy of being noticed, not an ornament her father brought out and displayed.
Her indecision fled with her nerves. Powered by her newfound desire, she stood and watched as he did so as well. As she took the three short steps toward him, he kept his emotionless expression fixed upon her. Before she lost her boldness, she placed her hands on his chest and pressed her lips against his.
The kiss only lasted a second before he reeled back, but Abigail could still feel the warmth of his mouth. The experience proved more pleasant than she expected. Her eyes fell to his soft lips, and she realized she wanted to kiss him again.
“What are you doing?”
“T-trying to entice y-you,” she stuttered. Her gaze moved away from his mouth, but her thoughts had not.
A conversation with Jane Beckenham, author of 'The Highwayman's Bride'
Hi Andrea, thanks for having me today as your guest.
'
What was the inspiration behind this book?
I always thought the idea of a highway robber romantic – as did my poor heroine until she tried it. But the idea really is how desperate would you need to be to have to resort to something like this – and especially in days when women were brought up to be sweet and nice and not much else.
What kind of research did you have to do for it?
Mostly just reading lots of articles about highway robbers. In fact, by 1813/14 highway robbery had nearly died out – (pardon the pun). This was because of the increase of policing etc. However there were still a few around and I used that as my jumping off point. Then of course there’s lots of research on clothing and lifestyle, but the one I had the most difficulty with was transport and how long it would take to ride from point A to B and was that doable. One wonderful fact I came across was a passage about frost fayres… about when rivers and lakes froze over completely and the Thames did this for the last time in February 1814 – it’s to do with not just the fact that it was an extremely cold winter, but that the Thames in those days was wider and therefore a lot more shallower in places and so would freeze over because the water was not so deep. This fact came in handy for a very important place in the book…..won’t tell because it would spoil your reader’s reading!
To which character do you best relate?
I think probably my poor tortured hero, not because I’ve been tortured LOL, but because I feel the man’s poor pain and sorrow and heartache and also feel guilty for putting him through it all. Bad, bad writer!
What is one of your favorite scenes?
I think I have two. One is when the hero and heroine are alone in a barn. It’s the first time really they are just themselves, with the world not interrupting them. Then actually there’s a really tender scene with the hero and his son, when the hero has to let the boy down – again.
If you could go back in time, where and when would you visit?
Oh this is easy. There’s a few periods really. Firstly the time of Henry 8th and Anne Boleyn, just for the intrigue of court life, but I’d have to make sure I kept my head attached to my neck! Then also when Cleopatra was queen. She was a strong woman, it would be interesting to see her in action, though I don’t particularly fancy bathing in ass’ milk!
What is so appealing about the historical romance novel for readers? For writers?
I think because my heroine Tess is stepping completely out of her comfort zone into the unknown. She’s desperate and she’ll do anything, but she is also a romantic and this new life she’s dared to try is nothing like what she’d read in books. Reality is brutal! For writers…hmm… I think knowing that when I started writing there was no son….but this little boy came into my head and said I really had to write him in, and he wouldn’t go away. He’s a lovely and quite integral part of the story and certainly more than a challenge for my hero.
You cite 'Island of the Blue Dolphins' by Scott O'Dell (one of my favorites!) as the first "real" book you have ever read. How do you define a "real" book? What was so compelling about that book for you?
This book I read probably as a 10 or 11 year old, so apart from Girls’ Annuals and comics LOL and maybe other school books is the 1st major book I remember. I loved the story and could feel the character’s angst, so I always say it’s the first proper book I read. Though I do remember a book we had to read at school – about age 7 – about King Arthur and the sword in the lake, loved it. I think maybe that is when my imagination about characters kicked in.
What drives you as a writer?
Pig headed determination. I do get these ideas that don’t go away, but more it’s just the joy of writing a character’s story, weaving the words together.
What is your advice for writers who are burned out by rejection?
Grit your teeth, eat some chocolate and keep on going. But really, it’s painful, depressing and gut wrenching. I remember once getting this rejection that completely floored me. I was sure this would be THE ONE. Nope. Well, by 4pm that after noon I’d already had a couple of rum and cokes, cried a who lot and eaten a huge amount of chocolate and then I went and had a lovely bubble bath.
By 8pm that night I was back writing! So there’s a bit of picking yourself up, pull up your socks and brush off the ‘hurt’, and do it all over again, and again and again. But…also what did the rejection letter say. Does it give you a hint where you went wrong. If so… look at it, work with it. Figure out what they’re saying. Did the other rejections say the same thing. If so…work hard at fixing that thing they say you’re not doing right.
But don’t give up.
What is something that readers may be surprised to learn about you?
I’m in love with my label maker. Am OCD about containers and labelling them LOL My family just roll their eyes when I’m in this mode. Or when I’m in my – let’s move the furniture around – mode! Oh the joy of it all.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
Well, I’m hoping that they’ll pop on over to my web site – www.janebeckenham.com and check out my other books. Also coming next year are two romantic suspense novels, one set in 1918 and the other in 1851 – so lots of fun – and research!
Thank you so much for your time!
And thank you Andrea for having me too. It was fun thinking about these questions and about my answers.
BLURB:
England, 1813
Forced into a marriage . . .
Compelled by her uncle to marry a man who has a predilection for violence, Tess Stanhope resorts to a ploy from her favorite novels to fund an escape—highway robbery. But her attempt is botched by a maddening, handsome rogue named Aiden.
Driven by revenge . . .
Aiden Masters, the Earl of Charnley, is hell-bent on avenging his sister’s brutal treatment at the hands of the criminal Florian Nash. He single-mindedly seeks vengeance at the expense of all else—even by furtively roaming the highways at night.
Blackmailed for love . . .
At a London party Tess meets up with Aiden once again and blackmails him...marry her or she’ll divulge to society his clandestine life as a highwayman. She desires a marriage in name only—but the more time they spend fighting their desire, the closer they come giving in.
Read an excerpt:
Her mind reeled at his closeness, a sensory world of heat and touch. Of sinful thoughts. Concentrate. Stick with the plan.
What plan? This had been a spur of the moment idea. Now she had to make it work.
A flurry of nerves and fear coiled tight in her gut. This man was big. Her gaze dropped to his hands. Big hands. Hands that could break her with one flick of his wrists.
Tess knew she tempted him, which was exactly as it needed to be if she were to succeed. Then he did something she hadn’t expected. He lifted a hand to her neck, scraping the back of his fingers along its curve. Her breath hitched for a heartbeat.
Do it, Tess. He’s your only hope.
“I desire the independence of a married woman,” she said in a rush.
His eyes darkened to the color of the deepest night sky. “And?”
The tip of her tongue slid along the rim of her mouth, and butterflies fluttered in her stomach. “Marry me, Aiden, and you’ll never see me again. Marry me, or I will announce to the world your penchant for robbery.”
His hand fell away, his expression instantly stony. “You are either very brave, Tess Stanhope, or extremely foolish.”
“I know what I want.”
“So do I.”
Then he kissed her—and that changed everything.
Meet Annie Seaton, author of the 'Romance Abroad' Bundle
Here is your chance to get to know author Annie Seaton a little better. Feel free to ask her your own romance abroad questions below!
What was the inspiration behind these stories?
Holiday Affair, the first story in the bundle was story that had been in my head for years. The setting came to me when we were on a sailing holiday in the Whitsunday Island and it all came together then.
What made you choose to bundle them all together?
My wonderful publisher offered to do that and I jumped at the chance. As a reader, I love series and to have them all together is a bonus.
To which character do you best relate?
I love Tomas in Italian Affair. He fulfils my need for list making and being orgainsed!
Which story is your favourite, and why?
I think Holiday Affair will always hold that special place because it was my debut novel. I achieved my dream with that book.
What is it about romance abroad that is so appealing to readers and writers?
We all love to travel and by providing readers with love stories in exotic and varied settings, they get to travel the world in their imagination.
Have you ever had your own romance abroad?
I was married and had my family by the time I travelled. So yes, I had a romance with my husband in Scotland!
What are some of your favorite travel destinations?
The Whitsunday islands are number one, Scotland, Vienna, Italy... I could fill a page.
Which ones remain on your bucket list?
The Caribbean, New York and Tuscany.
Australia is a place I would love to visit some day. What are some of your recommendations for visitors?
You must visit the tropical islands. From Mackay up to Cairns. They are the hidden jewels of the world. (I’ll attach a picture of my last visit for you to drool over.)
You have had a variety of careers over the years. Other than writing, which one was your favorite? Which was your least favorite?
I began my working life as a librarian and I loved that. I really can’t say I had a last favourite as I have a tendency to throw myself into everything I do with a passion. Being a teacher was very hard work and could be very sad at times.
What is something readers may be surprised to learn about you?
I can’t ride a bicycle.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I love hearing from readers. If they would like to subscribe to my newsletter to keep up with my news, they can subscribe here: http://bit.ly/1bMu8Da
HOLIDAY AFFAIR
Nothing more than a holiday fling…until he moved in next door!
Staid professor Lissy McIntyre believes that choosing a mate should be based on common sense, not runaway passion. And Lissy would certainly never pick a rolling stone like Nick Richards for long-term love. But a red-hot, tropical romance? Oh, yeah. He’s got a body just made for sinning and his sizzling kisses leave her senseless.
When Nick blows into town, he’s stunned to discover that his no-nonsense new neighbor and co-worker is the same sultry creature he seduced for one night of forbidden island pleasure. He’s unaccustomed to staying in one place for long, but he just can’t seem to keep his hands off the multi-faceted Lissy. Will Nick break loyal Lissy’s heart or will she be the one woman he simply can’t walk away from?
Read an excerpt:
Footsteps on the sand woke her a short time later, and she lay there, eyes closed, enjoying the kiss of the sun on her shoulders. The steps paused and she slowly opened her eyes to see a pair of tanned, male legs in front of her. With a groan, she rolled over and sat up, knowing without looking up just who those legs belonged to and understanding that those few minutes of peace had come to an end. Nick walked closer and sat down on the edge of her towel. She reached for her T-shirt and pulled it over her head to cover her bikini. Hunching her knees up against her chest, she snapped at him. “What the hell are you doing here and how did you find me? Why can’t—”
“I asked Mrs. Mac where you were when I couldn’t get ahold of you this morning.” He put his hand on her arm to stop her as she attempted to push herself to her feet. She shook his hand off angrily and stood up, looking down at him and watching warily as he played with handfuls of sand, funnelling it through his fingers as though he didn’t have a care in the world. He repeated the action three times without either of them speaking a word until she couldn’t stand it any longer. She kneeled down next to him on the towel, her eyes level with his as he played with the sand. She put her hands on his shoulders and felt the instant jolt of heat through her fingertips as she gripped him tightly.
“Nick,” she said, enunciating each word clearly as though she was speaking to a child. “You didn’t come here to build sandcastles. What are you doing here?”
His hand stilled and he lifted his eyes to meet hers. “The simple truth? I had to come. I couldn’t stay away from you.” He reached for her and tried to pull her into his arms. Her body trembled as a sudden strength surged through her. She pushed him and he fell back on her towel as she stood and ran through the dunes, leaving him lying on the sand. The passion she’d experienced with him was already unforgettable, and had touched her in ways she had never felt before. If she allowed him to touch her again, she didn’t think she would have the strength to face his next rejection.
Much easier to stop him now. She was panting by the time she reached the cottage and she slammed the door shut behind her. Standing at the sink, gripping the edge of the bench, she looked out the window at the big black motorcycle parked in the driveway. Her heartbeat slowly returned to normal, her anger subsiding. She reached for the kettle and stood wearily waiting for him to follow her, as she knew he would.
ITALIAN AFFAIR
Free-spirited sex therapist Brianna Ballantine has four days to find a fiancé so she can inherit her birth mother’s Italian villa. Commitment is not on the agenda. Writing her sex therapy book and signing legal papers are. And once all is said and done, she’ll return home to Scotland.
For finance guru Tomas Richards, relationships have been a bad investment—give him stocks and shares any day. When Tomas offers a marriage of convenience to help Brianna secure her inheritance, the sizzle between the sheets promises an affair to remember, despite family complications at every turn. But Tom must convince Brianna to stay, and make this Italian affair a lifelong commitment.
Read an excerpt:
“How would you feel about coming with me and translating for me at the lawyer’s tomorrow morning? You do speak the language like a native.” A shaft of red sunlight hit the wall behind him and she jumped up and grabbed his hand. “Come on. The sun’s setting over the Tyrrhenian Sea. We can’t miss that.”
He gathered up the cups and leftover food, put them back into the plastic bag she’d left on the seat, and then followed her out to the deck. The breeze was cool and they stood close together as the sun dropped low in the sky. One by one, the other passengers gave in to the cold breeze and headed back into the warmth of the saloon.
Brianna shivered and rubbed her arms. “I didn’t think to pack a coat. Summer in the Mediterranean, I thought it would be warmer.”
“It’s always cooler out on the water.” Tom removed his jacket and placed it around her shoulders. Her skin absorbed the lingering warmth. His fingers brushed her throat as he pulled it around her and she shivered again. But not from the cold, she thought.
“Happy to stay out here till sunset? It’s not far off now,” he said. He stood behind her and put his arms loosely around her, grasping the rail in front of them. She appreciated the warmth of his body blocking the chilly breeze blowing across the deck. They watched as the bloodred rays of the setting sun tinged the clouds with shades of color ranging from the palest pink to silver. The last sliver of the orb dropped behind the water to the west, and the wind dropped almost immediately.
“Would all their colors from the sunset take, from something of material sublime, rather than shadow our own soul’s day- time in the dark void of night,” Tom murmured.
“John Keats? You are full of surprises, Mr. Bursar.” Brianna looked back at him and the wind caught her loose strands of hair and blew it into his face. “Sorry.” She turned around, reached up, and removed the hair stuck to his cheek, and was surprised by an intent look on his face before he dipped his head and caught her lips with the soft warmth of his. It caught her by surprise, and she stood stiff in his arms, not sure how to respond. By the time she’d come to terms with it, he’d pulled back.
“You looked sad, Bri,” he said with a smile. “And I couldn’t resist trying to cheer you up. And, yes, I’ll help you out. I’ll come along to the lawyer and translate. Now, come back inside where it’s warmer and you can tell me more about this visit to the lawyer’s office and what you need me to find out.” Tom held out his arm and waited for her to take it. “Oh, and perhaps while we’re talking, maybe you can tell me if this has anything to do with your crazy proposal on the plane.”
Brianna took his arm and looked up into serious blue eyes. She had a feeling she’d been set up. Sucked in by poetry and a kiss.
OUTBACK AFFAIR
Jessica Trent wants to be a full-time writer for Cuisine magazine, but in order to land the gig she has to snare a one-on-one with the reclusive Alessandro Ricardo, a man hell-bent on staying out of the limelight. The last thing she expects as she heads to Crocodile Springs resort in northern Australia is to end up traveling across the Outback with a rugged and far too sexy barramundi fisherman.
Ex lawyer Alex Richards protects his privacy and his heart in equal measure. So when a Yankee bombshell in need of a ride turns up and threatens both, he decides to teach her a lesson. As they make their way through the wild country together, the attraction between them ignites. Alex must choose between his heart or letting go of his past … and will Jessica understand why he lied once she finds out who he really is?
Read an excerpt:
Alex looped the leash through the dog’s collar and climbed out, waiting for Bowser to follow him, but he turned in a circle and settled back on the seat. Jess stayed in her seat as well until he walked around and opened her door.
“I thought you needed a stop.”
“I do.” She swung her legs through the door and looked down at the bare dirt at the side of the road before lifting her gaze to meet his. “Are there any snakes here?”
“Sweetheart, there is nothing here.” He spread his arms wide and followed her gaze as she leaned out and looked around. Deep blue sky, big sky, contrasted with the bare red dirt. The only thing breaking the flat, red vista was the narrow road heading west in a perfectly straight, unbroken line. “No self respecting creature would survive out here.” Alex took pity on her as she looked hesitantly at the rough ground. She let out a soft gasp when he reached in and lifted her out, letting her slide down the front of him to the ground. A prickle of awareness shot through him as her soft breasts pressed against his chest, and he held her longer than necessary.
“I’ll get back in the truck with Bowser and close my eyes while you go around the back of the truck and use the…er… washroom.” He shrugged. “Sorry, we don’t have five star facilities in the outback.
“Looks to me like you don’t have any facilities.” She stepped gingerly toward the back of the truck and waited for him to get back in.
Alex hoisted himself up into this seat. He lifted Bowser onto his lap and waited. “What do you reckon, little buddy? She’s a looker, isn’t she?” All he got was a snuffle in reply. He leaned his head back on the seat and closed his eyes while he waited.
“Alex!” The shrill scream turned his blood to ice.
Cover Reveal! 'Deceitful Truths (Captured Lies #2)' by Maggie Thom
'Love by Deception' by Debra Elizabeth
LOVE BY DECEPTION
by Debra Elizabeth
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Content with her life as a lady's maid, Isabel Knott learns the father she never knew has left her a fortune. The news comes with one restriction—she can never reveal his name. Isabel falls in love with Colby Tisbury, but with her nonexistent pedigree his father, Lord Tisbury, will never accept her as his daughter-in-law.

Colby Tisbury must marry, and soon. If he doesn’t find a bride before the end of the Season, his father will supply one. Then Colby meets sassy Isabel Knott, and everything changes—but can he go against his father’s wishes and marry a girl utterly lacking in family and connections? Isabel is forced to make an impossible choice - reveal her secret identity and bring shame to her true father or lose Colby forever.

Read an excerpt:
“Of course, why wouldn’t you? You’re beautiful and smart, and perhaps with a few lessons, the perfect young lady for any gentleman to be happy to have as his wife.”

Isabel beamed at her sister. She always knew the right things to say to make her feel loved. A husband? Wouldn’t that be something? She closed her eyes and wondered what it would be like to be kissed, really kissed by a man. The only man she’d been around for most of her life was Mr. Condiff and half the time, he had ignored her.

“Isabel, are you listening?”

Isabel’s eyes popped open and she felt a blush rise up her neck. “Sorry, I was merely thinking about the possibility of attracting a husband.”

Georgette nodded. “I understand, but please pay attention. A lady’s most important accessory is her fan. Use it to give yourself a few moments to think of an appropriate response should a gentlemen come over and speak with you. It would not do well for you to blurt out the first thing that comes to mind.”

“Are you saying I’m too bold?”

“Maybe a little,” Georgette said.

Isabel stood and placed her teacup on the tray and hurried up the stairs. “I’ll be right back,” she said over her shoulder.

When Isabel came back into the parlor with a white lace fan, she saw her sister was frowning.

“Isabel, what are you doing?”

“I’m following your advice. Shall I practice for you?”

Georgette couldn’t help but smile. “Yes.”

Isabel set out to practice every scenario she could think of. “Miss Knott, it is a pleasure to meet you,” she said in her best imitation of a low, manly voice. Fanning herself, she batted her eyes and replied, “Thank you, sir. And who are you again? I’m so busy fanning myself that I completely forgot your name.”

Her sister’s laughter filled the front parlor. “Isabel, you’re shameless.”

“I know. Shall I demonstrate more?”

Before Georgette could answer, Isabel played out scene after scene entertaining her. She was laughing so much that tears rolled down her cheeks. “Stop, you must stop. I can’t breathe anymore,” Georgette begged.
