'Becca's Dance' by Jordyn Meryl

BECCA’S DANCE

The journey of life is not about the path traveled, it’s about the dance.

Remember your first love? The itching in your palms to touch that person, the churning sensation of your stomach when you kiss, or the promise of forever love? A summer romance had all the possibilities for Becca and Clay. But a tragic accident killing two of their friends, sent Becca running away to build a sheltered life, protected from pain. Clay tried to drown his pain in booze and other women, but failed. Each picked mates for reasons other than love.

Twenty years later their paths cross as Becca tries to escape from the shame of a divorce, and Clay is living life as a single father to six grown boys.

In the small community of Lester Lake, love, fate and star-crossed lovers work towards rekindling a first and only true love.

Read an excerpt:
Canvas after canvas she pulled out. Each a little more structured, sharper. Turning one around, she saw where Aunt Tilley numbered and dated them.
Becca's Fifth. Kind of like Beethoven’s fifth.
Even made her chuckle to herself. The last one, the biggest, hit her with the most impact. Of a stunning young man, standing on the dock leaning on the pilasters. His sun streaked hair blowing wisps in his light-blue eyes. His award-winning smile almost real, showing white teeth, crested a deep humor that always made her laugh.
Clay.
Becca stared at it for several minutes as sweet memories washed over her. The summer love you never forget.
Turning it around, this one Aunt Tilley had titled-Becca's First Love.
How many times over the last twenty years did she think of him? A million? What if she stayed the day he begged her? Would she be seeing her marriage end? Or would they have been like Robby and Susie, renewing their love in the solitude before kids, jobs, life.
Becca sat the picture on the floor, stepped back to look at it.
Where is he? Did I actually break his heart like Robby said?
A loud pounding on the door sharply interrupted her thoughts.
Wiping the dust from her hands on her jeans, she pushed loose wisps of hair from her face. Still thinking about Clay and that summer, she absent-mindedly opened the front door to the person waiting for her.
She gasped, gripped the door for support.
"Clay. Clay Lester." Older, but even more handsome than before if possible, the face from her canvas came alive.
In tight jeans, with a plaid flannel shirt open just enough to show the beginnings of his chest hair, his electric blue eyes still as bright and knee-weakening as ever.
Smiling, his eyes traveled down her body. "Becca. You look fantastic."
