'Chasing Destiny' by Mia Caldwell

Blurb:

When Destiny tells Carter she is accidentally pregnant, she doesn’t expect him to be thrilled. After all, they haven’t discussed any kind of future, and children have never come up. She could handle his shock and dismay, but she is unprepared for his accusation that she cheated on him. Leaving New York City and Carter behind, she returns to her hometown to figure out what to do next. Meanwhile, Carter has discovered he made a huge mistake and goes after her, but she refuses to return with him to the city. He’s determined to wait her out and settles into life in small-town Kansas as he works on wearing her down and earning her forgiveness. Can he ever make up for the things he said and win her back, or will he futilely chase Destiny forever?

This is a complete novella (approximately 25,000 words) with a happy ending and no cliffhangers.

Bonus content includes an older title that you might have missed, so you get two books in one.

Please note this is a novella, not a longer novel. Thanks!

Read Chapter 1:

Chapter One
Destiny paced back and forth through Carter Winslows large living room, anxiously awaiting the return of her boyfriend. Boyfriend seemed like such a tepid word for the relationship they had, but it was the only apt description. They were more than lovers, but certainly less than married or engaged, so she was stuck with boyfriend. She was also fixating on such an unimportant detail because she didnt want to think about his reaction when she shared her news.
They might have been together for the last nine months, completely consumed with each other physically, but she hadnt seen a lot of softening yet from him on an emotional level, and she was uncertain how he felt about her even after living with him for the last four months in his penthouse apartment above the building he owned, where he conducted business. It was certainly a step up in the world for her, having moved from being his receptionist to his girlfriend in the span of just a few months, but now she was afraid it was all slipping away.
Would he think she had done it on purpose? She hoped not, but it seemed like the kind of assumption a rich white guy might make about his far less economically blessed black girlfriend, especially since she had been trying to make him see for the last few months that she wanted something more permanent and definite between them.
So far, Carter had ignored all of those subtle and not-so-subtle hints, and she had been trying to let it go, knowing it would do no good to push him. He wouldnt make a commitment unless or until he was ready to do so, and the continued pressure on him was only likely to cause the implosion of their relationship.
She wanted to put it off, but she couldnt. She had to tell him now, or she might never say a word, which was a completely impractical thought, because he was bound to notice sooner or later.
She took a deep breath and steadied her nerves when the door opened, and he stepped through a few moments later. He had been in Atlanta for a meeting, so she hadnt seen him for the last three days. That should have given her time to sort out her own reaction and determine how she was going to tell him, but all of her preparation went out the window when she saw him as he hurried across the room and took her into his arms for a deep kiss.
It was so tempting to just melt into him, to let the natural conclusion occur, and perhaps whisper her news after they were both sated and lying in bed together. She couldnt do that though. He had to know, and he had to know now. She was compelled to tell him.
With a regretful sigh, she pulled away from him and stepped out of his arms. We have to talk.
Carter groaned, running a hand through his dark-blond hair. I hate those words.
His long-suffering tone and puppy dog eyes would have made her laugh under other circumstances, but she couldnt summon amusement at the moment, not with their future hanging in the balance. I have something to tell you, Carter.
It was his turn to sigh, and he eased away from her to head to the wet bar in the corner. Hold that thought, love. It was a long flight.
She could just imagine, recalling the occasions she had flown with him on his private jet. All the luxury in the world must have worn him out, she thought a twist of her lips. Either that, or perhaps he was too busy actively engaged in fending off the flight attendant, who had always made it perfectly obvious, even in front of Destiny, that she would serve all of Carters needs if he would just ask. What was her name again? Bambi? Buffy? Bimbo?
It didnt matter, and she was certain he wouldnt have reciprocated with the flirting, even though hed traveled alone this time due to her having a doctors appointment. That wasnt Carters style. He was direct, almost blunt, and he didnt believe in fooling around with someone else when he was in a relationship. At least so he said, and shed never had any reason to doubt him. It was her own insecurities and uncertainty about what was coming that prompted the response now.
She waited until he had a drink and had taken a seat on the leather couch before heading over to join him. Knowing the seriousness of the discussion forthcoming, she left a cushion between them and curled up in the opposite corner. How was your meeting?
Carter sighed heavily, wiping a hand down his face and shaking his head slightly. Exhausting. Peters is a stubborn old goat, and he doesnt want to accept help, so Im trying to sidestep him by working with his grandsons, but they lack a few shares to have controlling interest, so were trying to find someone who will sell to them. Its tedious and frustrating, and also completely boring. He turned his head to grin at her, holding out a hand and gesturing her to close the distance between them.
She shook her head and stayed where she was.
He frowned. What have I done to upset you?
Destiny frowned. You havent done anything. Why would you ask that?
He shrugged. In my experience, women pout when Ive done something wrong, or have denied them something they want. His eyes narrowed, and she could practically see the ugly thought flashing through his mind. Like a diamond engagement ring.
She tensed, once more tempted to back out on the conversation, or at least postpone it until she felt braver. Only knowing she would never feel braver or more sure of his response kept her seated on the couch and forced her mouth to work. Its nothing either one of us have done. It was just something that happened.
His eyes narrowed, and he looked wary. What are you talking about?
I havent been feeling well lately, and I thought it was just the birth control shot disagreeing with me, so I saw my gynecologist Wednesday, the day you left for your trip. That was why couldnt come with you to Atlanta, if you recall? At his nod, his expression giving away nothing, she continued, Its not the shot giving me problems, other than the fact that it failed to work properly. Im pregnant, Carter.
He sat still for a moment as his expression gradually darkened. It isnt mine.
She jerked back in shock, never having expected him to say something so horrible. She hadnt expected him to be thrilled about the idea of them being parents when they were barely more than a couple living together at the moment, with the state of their relationship uncertain, but shed never expected him to accuse her of infidelity. Thats a terrible thing to say, Carter. Ive never cheated on you.
He glared at her, his expression making it plain he didnt believe her. I didnt get you pregnant, but someone sure as fuck knocked you up. If it wasnt a fling, maybe you got artificially inseminated. After all, youd do anything to have my money, wouldnt you?
She flinched at the accusation, shaking her head. I dont want your money. All I want is you, though Im having a difficult time remembering why at the moment.
I dont like games, and I sure as fuck wont be manipulated into marrying you just to claim a kid that isnt mine. I want you out. You have an hour to pack and get out of my house—and dont come back.
Of all the ways she had imagined this would turn out, it had never crossed her mind that he would refuse to accept paternity and throw her out of his apartment. In the dark of night a couple nights ago, she had briefly entertained the idea that he might be so appalled by the thought of having a child with her that he would send her away, but she hadnt expected him to ever try to deny it was his.
Who was this man, and how had she fallen in love with him? He was nothing like the Carter she knew, the man shed been waiting for to give her a firm commitment for the last few months.
Suddenly, it seemed entirely plausible that he had never intended to commit to her, and that the deeper feelings had all been on her side. Perhaps she had been nothing more than a diversion, or even worse, a novelty. By his own admission, he had never dated a black woman before, so what if she had been just an item to cross off his bucket list? It would certainly explain why he was so determined to cling to the assertion that he wasnt the father.
Well? What are you waiting for? Times ticking away. Im sure you need to cram all the designer clothes you can get out of here into your bags in the next hour.
That was another direct attack, and one that she felt was really unfair. It was true she had several pieces from designers in her closet, but they had been gifts from him and purchased at his insistence, since he had claimed she would need to dress the part to act as his hostess or his companion when they went to various functions.
Just like the jewelry in her jewelry box, it had all been his idea to purchase, and certainly nothing shed ever requested. Shaking her head, still disbelieving his reaction, Destiny got to her feet and turned away from him. She couldnt stand to look at him for the moment.
She marched away from him to the bedroom they shared and went to her closet on her side of the bed. His closet was arranged on the other side of the bedroom suite. Her fingers were clumsy, and it took a few tries to actually start getting things off the hanger, but soon enough, shed filled both of her suitcases with her meager possessions, leaving behind anything he had purchased for her.
She almost bypassed the jewelry box too, but she stopped at the last moment and gathered a handful of the more expensive items from the bottom drawer. Shed given up her job months ago, and it might take a while to find a new one. If he wasnt going to live up to his financial responsibilities to their baby, shed just have to find an indirect route to let him support them.
Perhaps she should feel a twinge of guilt for taking some of the jewelry, but since she had no intention of keeping it and was planning to pawn it for living expenses, she decided it wasnt a morally ambiguous move to take. It certainly wasnt anywhere near as morally decrepit as denying paternity of their child and kicking her out onto the street.
When she returned to the living room, he was gone. It was better that way, because she didnt have the right vocabulary to tell him goodbye. Not because she was uneducated, but simply because she was still stunned by how he had behaved, and how quickly he had resorted to believing the worst of her and kicking her out of his life.
It was obvious he didnt want the child and cared nothing for either one of them, so she would have to love their baby enough for both of them. She was certain she could do that at least, because from the moment she had found out she was expecting, she had been nothing but excited, at least when it came to the baby. Considering his reaction had made her fretful and worried, but now even that was over. The worst had happened, so all she had to do was rebuild and move on.
That seemed like a daunting prospect, but she would just have to summon the strength to do so. She didnt want a man who would think something so low about her, and it was obvious now that Carter believed she was with him at least partially for the things he could give her.
Feeling sick to her stomach, she locked the apartment behind her and walked away without looking back. The elevator took her to the ground floor, and she bypassed the garage where a small hatchback was at her disposal, yet another gift from Carter. That was one gift she had no intention of taking either. The only thing she was taking with her that Carter gave her was her shattered heart and their child.

Gideon Rice, is a veteran Marine and respected psychiatrist with more emotional wounds than his patients. He lives his life in camouflage–a wall between his rejection filled past and his new life ensures the two worlds never intersect. Gideon’s life plan is simple–give wounded warriors a place to heal and convince Lina James she’s the only woman for him.

When Lina’s past brings danger to her doorstep, she’s forced to accept Gideon’s help. His tender touch and determination to keep her safe, rocks the foundation of her man-fast, but she’s determined to resist her cravings.

How will she keep him at arms length when he is the safe haven she’s always wanted?

In a high stakes game of cat and mouse, how will they find the courage to risk their hearts in a fight for their lives?

Read the first chapter:

"I know you can hear me. Open the door." Lina let her arms fall to her side. Time to discard the baggage. Turning around, she stalked through the open balcony door, crossing the glass and steel dining kitchen combo room en route to the front entrance. At the incessant knocking and unrelenting buzzing she reached for BETAS, the smooth hardwood stick she kept by the door. Jace would be the first person to experience the power of her wood deterrent.
A leather tie long enough to slip over her wrist held it suspended by a j-hook on the adjacent wall. She was thankful the beveled glass inlay door separated her from the intended target. Standing in her foyer, she offered him a final opportunity to walk away from her welcome mat.
"I have BETAS with me and we both agree it's in your best interest to get away from my door." Grateful it was Sunday morning, her neighbor usually slept until noon. The thought of Estrella witnessing a live breaking news event, she could do without.
"Betas. Who is Betas?" Steam that could rival a tea kettle rolled off her at his tone and inflection. He abandoned me and he had questions? Not in this lifetime, buddy.
"Lina." The singsong quality was gone. His voice was sharp with disapproval.
Lina grabbed the door handle, turned the lever, and pulled the door open a fraction. Jace's lean frame darkened a sliver of her doorway. For a moment, they both regarded each other, without exchanging a word. He stood in his white, long-sleeved button down collared shirt paired with a navy sweater vest. The dark blue and green pinstriped tie she purchased for his birthday knotted to perfection at his thin neck. Khaki Dockers and black oxfords completed the ensemble. She felt her brows bunch and her lips purse. The unwelcome intrusion had her fist tightening on BETAS.
The morning breeze carried the floral amber scent of his cologne through the partially open door. It was seventy-seven degrees in the shade. Most native Floridians would consider that hot for an Atlantic coast January. Coupled with the mid-morning humidity, the smell was about as welcoming as a park trash can. Bile rose up in her throat and she swallowed in succession. Gastric disaster averted.
"It's about time. I'm melting out here." Beads of sweat dotted his forehead and the bridge of his nose. The dark brown mess of curls plastered to his forehead were a sharp contrast to his pale blue eyes and reddening skin.
"Then go home." He moved to step inside her condominium, but her full-figure blocked his path. Considering she was two inches taller in her bare feet, he was the one to halt. He regarded her, irritation clear on his boyish face.
"Does he know I'm at the door?" He had the audacity to be territorial after the crap he'd done to her.
"Who Jace?" An image of her curling her fingers around his tie, pulling him close flashed in her mind. Feeling the warmth of his breath on her chin, while she inched the knot higher up his neck. Watching as he turned a kaleidoscope of colors before losing consciousness brought a smile to her face. To kill was sinful, but to choke was divine payback. Right?
"Do I know Betas?"
"No, but he wants to meet you," she gave a saccharine smile. The stick resting at her side seemed to pulse against her palm. The leather lariat around her left wrist felt tighter. She glanced downward, and he tracked her movement. His eyes came to rest on the stick in her hand. Eyes wide in alarm, he took a cautionary step back. Yep, caution warranted. She'd had enough of his drop by visits.
"Meet BETAS, my beat-that-ass-stick." Jace took

a step back. "If I raise this stick above my

kneecap, he doesn't go back on the wall until somebody gets their ass beat."

#KindleCountdown 'Desire & Prejudice' by Jean-Louis McMillan

About the book:

Desire and Prejudice is about the healing power of true lovemaking and the damning power of ethnic bias.

When Jasmine and Adam first meet, they are both totally caught by surprise; their inner feelings are the magnetic force that draws them to each other. Their burning desires toward one another are unstoppable, but they are condemned by their separate lives - he is a French official and she is a Muslim.

They find ways to be with each other when they couldn't.

The poetic letter takes the reader into the minds of two lovers desperately wanting one another, but each holding back because of their cultural backgrounds and the fear of getting caught in their dangerous game.

The erotic descriptions are vivid enough, but scarcely the right quantity of description to know precisely what is going on.

Desire and Prejudice is much more than “boy meets girl, they fall in love”; it tells a realistic, believable story that readers haven't heard before.

These characters, nor the twisted end of the story, are definitely not the stereotypical a reader can predict.

Rave reviews!
What a fast, thrilling read! "Desire & Prejudice" is an erotic love story of social significance with a strong political bent. I was immediately drawn into the narrative through McMillan's gentle prose, vivid imagery and emotions, and highly likable characters. It's only 140 pages, but it could've been twice as long. I couldn't put it down! - Michelle

Let me just say it out loud: McMillan has written an incredibly immersive, deeply satisfying tale in ‘Desire and Prejudice.’ Forgot about those hastily and sloppily written contemporary romantic fiction—think Ian McEwan, but with a more romantic bent, and you get the picture. This is a book that all romance fans must simply check out. - Meghan, Top 500 Reviewer

Read Chapter 5 of 'Only Wheat Not White (Love Beyond Borders)' by Varsha Dixit

Blurb:

What if the one you completely love is the one you simply can't!

Twenty-six-year-old Eila Sood moves to America to mend fences with her estranged older sister, Sheela. Eila and the rest of the family in India had cut off ties with Sheela after she married Steve Jacobs, 'out of caste, and out of color'.

Elia soon realizes that Sheela's marriage is on the rocks. To help pay Sheela's household bills, Eila takes a second job at an afternoon strip club. When she crosses paths with the owner, the handsome Brett Wright or 'blue-eyed ogre' as Elia calls him, he both infuriates and fascinates her. Brett turns out to be her reluctant and unquestionably sarcastic knight in shining armor.

As Eila and Brett spend more time together their desire for each other builds. However, when Brett discovers the true reason for Eila's refusal he storms out of her life, accusing her of being a prejudiced coward.

Will Eila find the courage to break stereotypes and embrace her love? Will Brett find solace in the arms of his ex-girlfriend Cate?

Will Sheela and Steve divorce? All of these questions and more are answered in best selling author Varsha Dixit's latest, steamy love story.

Chapter 5: Brown Paper Bag
“Sorry!” Sheela murmured sheepishly.
Next Sheela anointed Eila’s forehead with the turmeric and red powder. “Enough, Di!” Eila feebly attempted to ward off the rice Sheela showered on her. Aryan and Adam gawked from behind Sheela’s legs. Eila noticed that Steve had gone back to the SUV.
Eila quickly stepped inside the house. Di’s house! A warm feeling swelled in Eila’s chest. Steve’s house too! That little reminder stirred some coolness into the warmth.
Sheela gestured at Eila to move past the foyer. Eila did and ended up getting tangled in a net apparition complete with bells and beads.
“What the...” Irked, Eila disentangled her body from the multiple strings that hung as a curtain partition between the living room and foyer. “From the Indian stores at Oak Tree, New Jersey.” Sheela informed as Eila yanked the last of the blue shiny beads clinging to her hair.
They were now in a small living room, sporting elegant beige furniture. Eila walked through the living room that gave way to a larger area with the kitchen on one side and a family room on the other. Glass doors at the end of the family room led to the backyard. Eila caught glimpses of well trimmed grass and flower beds. Between the living room and kitchen area was a staircase that led to the second floor. The downstairs rooms were painted in warm colors of robin’s egg blue and pastel green. Black and white portraits of the boys were artistically arranged on the walls. Eila saw no other family in the pictures, not even one of Sheela and Steve.
“Very nice, Di,” Eila complimented.
“Thanks!” Sheela beamed.
Running footsteps heralded the arrival of the boys.
“Aryan, please take off your shoes and help Adam take off his!”
Sheela shepherded the boys to a closet behind the stairs.
Eila saw Steve enter with her bags. He too had a problem with the
string curtains between the foyer and living room. Eila moved to help him but he shrugged her away. “I got it.” Dragging the bags, he took the stairs. Eila wanted to follow him but then decided to wait for Sheela.
The sisters followed Steve. The staircase ended at a landing that had been set up like a home office. Opposite the landing was a corridor with several white doors on either side. Eila saw Steve disappear into the first door on the left.
Sheela led Eila into the same room. The room was small but quaintly done. It housed a wrought iron bed with a geometric bedspread in pastel pink and blue. The wooden floor was dark in color. A chest of drawers with a mirror stood in the corner. Once Eila’s bags occupied the floor, there wasn’t much space to move around.
Next to the bed was a small oval table on which sat a pretty and colorful Tiffany lamp. Instinctively, Eila knew it was no coincidence that the lamp had been set next to her bed. Their mother loved Tiffany style lamps and their house back in India was peppered with such lamps. She gave Sheela a warm smile.
“It’s not much.” Sheela appeared sheepish. Back home they were used to a lot more and Sheela remembered that.
“No worries. It’s perfect. Very cozy,” Eila countered moving to the side to make room for Steve.
He maneuvered his large frame out of the tiny room. Eila heard his heavy footsteps go down the stairs. She said hesitantly. “Silent kind, huh?” Sheela didn’t defend or accuse her husband. Her answer was a
peculiar deadpan smile. Eila found that smile and accompanying expression eerie.
The very next minute, Sheela changed the topic. “So how’s everyone at home?”
Eila’s sigh was one of suffering. “That’s the third time you’ve asked me. They’re fine. Everyone’s just become a little older, except for Tina. She’s stuck in a time warp, refusing to grow up!”
Sheela’s smile was sentimental. “You two are still at it? My memories of home seem to be all about mediating between you and Tina.” She parked her rump on the corner of the bed.
“Now we kind of mediate ourselves. By the way, the brat, Tina is now a super smart businesswoman adeptly handling the family business of textile import and export.”
“What are you saying? Wow! Tina is handling the business?”
Eila’s smile was smug. “Actually she doesn’t just handle the business; she runs it!”
Sheela nodded, impressed.

“And you, Di? How are you coping? Your life has changed drastically.”
Sheela avoided looking at Eila as she answered. “Things have been great. Very busy with the boys and all.”
Well, good for you! Ever missed your other family? The one that you were born into? Your two younger sisters? Remember them at all? With some effort Eila shut out her angry thoughts. Their sudden appearance surprised her. With a jerk, Eila moved to her suitcases. “Work for another day! Work for another day!” she chanted under her breath.
Sheela leaned forward. “What?”
Eila flashed an overtly bright smile. “Where do you work? That’s what I was asking.”
Sheela shifted on the bed. “Um, I don’t. I’m a stay-at-home mom.” To Eila’s ears Sheela’s small laugh at the end of the words sounded strained.
Slack jawed, Eila stared at her. She quickly recovered. Her eyes still held shock. “You, you don’t work? The ambitious, totally career driven libertarian of our family does not work? Why?”
Sheela’s smile was wry. “It got very hard with the kids. One of us had to be at home for them. As it is Steve works crazy long hours.”
Of course, he does. Eila persisted. “So you gave up your career?”
Sheela slid off the bed. “It’s just temporary. Aryan and Adam need me.” Her smile forced, Sheela changed the topic. “Let me show you the bathroom. Are you hungry?”
Eila shook her head. “No, not really. I’ll unpack first and take a shower. Then food.” She let Sheela change the topic. More subjects were finding their way into Eila’s work-for-another-day list.
“I can help you with the unpacking.” Sheela was already on her knees working the latch of one suitcase.
“Oh! Okay.” Eila joined Sheela on the floor. For nearly an hour they worked side by side making mundane conversation and stacking things in appropriate nooks and corners. Their parents were deliberately left out of the discussion. They were down to the last of Eila’s bags.
“What’s this?” Sheela’s hands stilled. Between Eila’s clothes she encountered a brown paper package.
“Mom sent a few things for Aryan and Adam,” Eila replied, sitting back on her haunches.
“She did?” Sheela whispered, awestruck. Her eyes shone as she delicately turned the package around in her hands. Then she brought it to her face and smelled it deeply. Caressing the brown paper, Sheela murmured, “You know, El, I wasn’t expecting anything, but I guess I was hoping. Thank you.” Sheela glanced up, her hazel eyes luminous. Staring straight into Eila’s eyes, she spoke softly. “Sometimes I feel like such an orphan.”
“You are not!” Eila’s voice was gruff.
Sheela’s smile was watery. Holding the package with one hand, she jerked to her feet. Keeping her face turned away, Sheela said, “The bathroom is the next door on your left. You’ll have to share it with the boys. Or you can use ours.”
“That’s fine, I’ll share with the boys.”
“Let me see what Aryan and Adam are up to.” Clinging to the package, Sheela made a quick getaway. “Come down when you’re done. We’ll eat then.”
It took all of fifteen minutes for Eila to put away the rest of her stuff and slide her empty suitcases under her bed. Grabbing a small towel, she tentatively entered the bathroom armed with a leather vanity pouch.
Gingerly, she stepped into the bathtub to take a shower in front of an audience. Yup! An audience all right! A large green frog with a fierce smile, an ogling orange fish and an assortment of rubber action figures holding an array of miniature arms. They were lined up neatly on all three sides of the tub and looked straight at Eila’s naked body. “Perverts!” She grinned and turned the faucet on.
As Eila made her way downstairs, she heard loud voices. She froze. Eila overheard Sheela ask out loudly, “Why did you make sandwiches for them? I had cooked dinner. All you had to do was warm it.”
Steve’s voice was low but caustic. “They did not want to eat that. They wanted something else. Anything else!”
“Really! You or them, Steve?” Sheela accused.
“Sure, me too. That food tastes awful.”
“Yes, it tastes awful because it’s not meatballs and spaghetti or ribs
dripping with sauce or some other awful fat-laden dish you are used to eating.”
“Don’t bring my mother into this,” Steve snapped.
“And Aryan and Adam’s mother is fair game?” Sheela was quick to retort.
Eila heard a thump and then Steve yelled. “You know what, I’m sick of this food. Just make it for yourself and your sister. The boys and I will eat something else.”
“As long as you are in this house, everyone will eat what I make.” Sheela sounded equally mad.
“Another reason for me not to be here,” Steve responded forcefully.
After a very long minute, while Eila held her breath, Sheela responded indifferently, “No one’s stopping you.” Eila heard Steve’s heavy steps coming in her direction; he was probably heading for the front door. Crap! Eila softly hotfooted it to the landing and crouched down behind the banister. Without breaking stride, Steve walked past the stairs.
Eila heard the front door slam and then a few minutes later a vehicle roared to life. She came down the stairs and headed to the kitchen. She found Sheela rinsing some dishes.
“Di?” Even to her ears Eila’s voiced sounded like that of a worried child.
