Review of 'On the Inside' by Kim Cano

Blurb

When Kristen is sentenced to seventeen years for committing a white collar crime, she’s forced to leave her husband and two sons behind.

Life in prison is a shock. She discovers that people aren’t always what they seem, love wears many faces, and friendship can make life worth living.

But as she struggles to survive on the inside, Kristen must face something even more frightening than her fellow inmates. . . herself.

**Rave reviews!**

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful story of love, hardship, devotion, sorrow, and forgiveness December 10, 2013

By Clare Chu

Kristen is the main character. She's in jail for bilking her employer out of a huge sum of money. In the process, she lost the trust of her husband and children and virtually bankrupted them. They are bitter and wary of her, but she continues to send letters to her husband telling him how sorry she is. The only family member to write back is her sister-in-law, Olivia, who extends a lifeline to her with family pictures and events.
We also meet an array of colorful characters from the flashy inmate, Lupe, to the prison psychiatrist, Megan, the warden, Laura, Kristen's antagonist, Jess, and many others. Each person has their story, their trials, and triumphs, and you'll find yourself rooting for all of them.
Ms. Cano expertly weaves in multiple points of view to make you understand and empathize with all of these people. Each has his or her own pain and sorrow as well as aspirations for a better future. Necessarily, some of the stories end tragically whereas others move on as best they can. But Kristen and the others learn to take happiness in small places and to accept what can't be changed.

 **My thoughts**

A story about inmates isn't necessarily one I am going to run for at the store. Yet, I decided to give this one a chance. I also wouldn't normally want to root for a criminal heroine, yet you find yourself really liking these women. Yes, they have done horrible things. Some of them are probably beyond help. Most of them are truly sorry for the wrongs that they have caused and are doing what they can to fix themselves. They still love and crave love. They still long for happiness in the midst of despair. Some are able to move forward. Some will never make it out alive.

The women who work with these inmates also have a lot of issues to deal with. It isn't always the safest job in the world. It can be quite rewarding, yet also extremely frustrating. It is fascinating, yet almost horrifying at the same time.

Kim Cano treats her characters with respect and honesty. Their story is intriguing.

Read an excerpt:
Luggage backs up, causing one bag to fall off the machine. Angry travelers glare at me, as if I've made it my mission in life to make them late. Only one person doesn't make me feel like a total jerk. He looks like a cowboy with his wide-brimmed brown leather hat, pointy boots and belt buckle. I suck in a breath when we make eye contact, his blue eyes two shades darker than mine. This is the kind of man writers dedicate romance novels to. Broad chested with ropes of muscles under his shirt, strength earned from real work not a gym, skin sun-kissed and glowing. He smiles at me and my knees go weak.

Le sigh.

Feeling the heat rush to my face, I nod my head in my most regal fashion and turn away as the scrawny 20-something guy working behind the x-ray machine asks me to follow him so he can inspect my bag.

He steps to the side and opens my red carry-on, shuffling through my iPad, a change of clothes and other staples I was told to always carry with me in case my luggage was ever lost. There are perks to being one of the youngest in a family of world travelers.

My jaw drops when he pulls out a gallon sized plastic baggie and dumps the contents—items I've never seen before in my life—onto the counter. Holding up a pair of red G-String panties with a matching bra, if that slip of silk can be called a bra, and a handful of—oh my God—condoms?

He smirks at me and reads aloud the note that's in the baggie. "Winter, Have some fun this summer. Here's a starter sex kit to help you out. All my love, your favorite cousin, Daring."

I want to die.

I want the floor to open up and swallow me, or lightning to strike me dead.

I want them to arrest me, just so I can get away from the dozens of eyes taking in my humiliation.

I fight the urge to tell them I have a bomb, or maybe that I am the bomb. Or to tell them I'm a drug mule. Anything to divert attention from the most embarrassing moment of my entire life.

And then I remember the hot cowboy.

Who's standing behind me.

Who heard and saw everything.

My cheeks, I can already feel, are a flaming red. I probably look like my head is about to explode. I wish it would, so I won't have to live in this moment any longer.

An older woman, probably the supervisor, grabs the note and the panties from the jerk staring at me. "I think you've sufficiently searched this bag." She nods sympathetically at me and shoves Daring's gift back under my clothes, zipping my suitcase shut. "Sorry for the inconvenience, ma'am. You can take your belongings and head to your gate now."

Review of 'Seduced by Power' by Kimberly Kinrade

BLURB:

Forbidden passions.
Deadly secrets.
A love that will stand against it all.

Their passions will destroy them.
Only true love will save them.

Find out why critics and fans are raving about the Seduced Saga. Heat, romance, mystery and poetic writing make the Seduced Saga an original new adult paranormal romance that you won't be able to put down!

In Seduced by Power, the final book in Rose's Trilogy, Rose and Derek face the greatest threat to their love, and lives, as they are forced to make painful choices to save those they love the most.

They give everything they have to end the battle against Rose's mother and retrieve that which was stolen from them. But will it be enough to save them?

Available March 18, 2013

Get caught up in the Seduced Sage with Seduced by Innocence and Seduced by Pain.

Coming Soon: Seduced by Love (A Surprise Seduced Book)
Seduced by the Sea (Ocean's Story)

**My thoughts**

I was chomping at the bit for this third installment to come out, especially after the second one ended in such a cliffhanger! And then Kimberly teased all of us by putting up just the first chapter. All we knew was that Rose's dark gift finally managed to take Derek away. ACK!

I ended up devouring the entire thing in less than an hour on a short car trip. I wanted no one to talk to me, so that I could concentrate on the final battles.

I will admit that like all final books in a trilogy, this one is my least favorite. I think this is because the climax hits in the second book, or at least in the very beginning of the third one, and the resolution comes rolling down like its on a steep embankment. (Think back to those charts you studied back in English class.) But the sheer NEED for that third book compels you to stick with it. I also tend to read the third book the fastest, to satisfy that need to know what happened.

This book is also the darkest of the three. It's less sexy. And that's okay. It's dealing with bigger issues than sex. And I think it is my favorite collection of Kimberly's that I have read to date.

So, now having read the entire trilogy, I guess you can say that Kimberly Kinrade completely seduced me with Rose and Derek's story. It does feel like it is just beginning. I look forward to reading the other stories that are coming out and hope to see these characters again!

'Seduced by Pain' by Kimberly Kinrade Book Tour Review

BLURB:
Their passion will destroy them.
Only true love can save them.

"Hope is a fragile thing, yet strangely enduring. It hides in the crevices of pain, burrowing deep until unseen, for fear that sorrow, in its rage, will devour hope's desperate hold on the heart.

It can live there for years, silent and waiting. Or, it can be slaughtered with a word-- mankind's most powerful weapon.

They say that universes are created with words.

And with words, they are destroyed.

Just as mine has been."

***

In the sequel to Seduced by Innocence, Derek and Rose face even greater threats to their love as Derek fights to protect the core of his family's power while Rose struggles to control her own dark gift.

***
Recommended for 17+ due to explicit sexual content. This is a new adult paranormal romance with erotic content and includes shifters, demons and witches.

**Rose's story is a trilogy, not stand alone books. The first two books have cliffhanger endings. Her complete story in one book will be available as "Seduced" when the author finishes writing all three books and they are out. If you do not like cliffhanger endings, please consider waiting to purchase until Seduced the omnibus edition is out.**

Submit to the Seduced Saga as Derek and Rose face their future while unraveling the mysteries of their past.

Look for these books in the Seduced Saga coming 2013.

Seduced by Innocence (Rose's Story, Book 1)
Seduced by Pain (Rose's Story, Book 2)
March 2013- Seduced by Power (Rose's Story, Book 3)

TBA - Seduced by the Sea (Ocean's Story)
TBA- Seduced by Love (A Surprise!)

**My thoughts**

Because this is the second book in the trilogy, I was better prepared for the steamy sex scenes that threw me off in the first installment. (Remember, I had just finished reading five of Kimberly's chapter books for kids! I knew that this series was supposed to be steamy. It was just culture shock for a moment!)

And WOW is all I can say about those scenes! I read 50 Shades of Gray in its entirety. That series has nothing on what Kimberly Kinrade offers in the Seduced series. Her scenes in this book are scorching hot AND there is actually a compelling story happening at the same time.

Rose is finally learning how to control her dark gift. Blake is no longer who we thought he was. Derek is trying to forgive Rose for what she did to his family. As the couple tries to salvage their relationship, they find their way to a familiar place that strives to help them and many others. A few favorite characters from The Forbidden Trilogy make an appearance, much to my delight!

New secrets are revealed, which rock their worlds and cause even more conflict. I actually exclaimed out loud at a few of the revelations! I guarantee you will get sucked in and then shriek when it suddenly ends! Lucky for us, the third installment releases this month!

The Guilty Innocent is the second novel in the edgy, action-packed, sexually-charged, Knights of the Darkness Chronicles. In this installment, Darian, the gorgeous, charismatic and charming master vampire of Chicago is framed for a crime he didn't commit, but why? His lover, Xavier, Natasha and a few others must travel halfway across the world to find out who and why before time runs out and all hell breaks loose!

Original, sexy and gritty, the Knights of the Darkness Chronicles will suck you in and take you for a ride you won't forget!

Read an excerpt:
Darian casually looked down at the photograph then up toward the detectives. As I listened to the conversation, I could hear the detective identify the man in the picture. His name was Anthony Juliano. Apparently, he was the assistant day manager at Desires Unleashed before Annette took the position. Anthony had been found dead, his body burned. Only a partial skull and a few bone fragments were discovered amidst the ash. The only method in which he had been identified was through dental records. Darian said he didn’t know what had happened to Anthony Juliano. The detectives appeared to become frustrated, Darian was being so compliant, and he was completely relaxed as if he had not one worry in the world. The detectives then accused Darian of murdering Anthony as well as Annette. I would guess they were attempting to get a rise out of him, hoping he would accidentally give something away.

Those two are imbeciles,” Xavier growled. When I looked at him, his Lips were pressed tightly together, a frown on his face. He must be incensed ... and worried. Darian is his lover and master; his loyalty is to him. I have to admit, I didn’t enjoy seeing Darian in this situation either. I believed he was being framed by the same person who had killed Annette.

He didn’t do this!” Xavier said through clenched teeth. “Warren, when can he receive visitors? How long will he be here?” he asked, never taking his worried gaze from Darian.

Seven days, this would be day one. We have six days to find the truth, on the seventh day, he’ll have his trial.” Warren looked at Xavier and me. We don’t have time to waste. Tomorrow, Darian can have visitors, but not until then.”

Oh my God! This situation was getting worse with every passing minute! It was easily turning into one of the worst nights of my life. My heart was heavy with grief and my mind swam with thoughts of justice and revenge. I wanted to go home. I told Warren I wanted to leave and he agreed. As the three of us walked toward the door, Darian’s lawyer entered the interrogation room, declaring that his client had been more than agreeable and he need not answer any more questions. The two detectives looked at each other and nodded. They both left the room, leaving Darian alone with his lawyer. That was the last thing I saw as I exited the secret room, closing the door behind us.

Warren drove me home. “I can come up there with you to keep you company. You don’t have to go through this alone,” he said sympathetically. I forced a smile which I could tell didn’t fool Warren, not that I was trying to pretend otherwise. It was very thoughtful of him to offer. I was frightened; I couldn’t understand why someone would kill Annette. Could I be a target also? If I were, a little protection would be in my best interest. “Thank you, Warren. I would really appreciate that.”He smiled and nodded. I looked at Xavier, who was staring out of the window in deep thought. His elbow rested on the frame, his chin resting on his fingers.

Xavier? I asked. The sound of my voice seemed to bring him out of his thoughts. He looked at me, his eyes were as blank as if he was in a trance, and it unnerved me. I was used to seeing Xavier in better spirits. What are you thinking about?”

He took a deep breath then released it. “Darian.” His eyes panned over both Warren and me. “For the time being, he will stay calm and await his seven days but he will not let them kill him. Those two S.U.I.T. detectives aren’t interested in the truth. I watched them tonight; their only concern was the fact that they had “bagged” a master vampire,” Xavier said.

A seemingly untouchable one at that,” Warren added. He took my hand and gently squeezed it reassuringly. I was too caught up with what Xavier was saying.

Xavier continued revealing his thoughts. He shook his head gravely. “ He’ll go rogue. He will kill whoever stands in the way of his freedom. It will be a massacre.”

I must have gasped, because both men looked at me. I seemed to be the only one surprised by the idea of Darian killing innocent people to escape death.

Natasha, you must understand, Darian is a master vampire, centuries old. He will not be brought down by this. Going rogue is not something he would want to do. He has worked extremely hard establishing himself here in Chicago, especially after the Exposure, which is why he’s being compliant now. However, if push comes to shove, things will get ugly,” Xavier said as a matter-of-fact.

'Seduced by Innocence' by Kimberly Kinrade Review Tour

BLURB:
Seduction comes in many forms.

"Liquid fire poured into me, filling me with the intimate sense of him as he leaned in to claim my lips with his own. I reached for him, needing him closer, but my arms couldn't close the distance between us, which grew wider with each hitched breath. So close to finally feeling something real, something carnal and deep, I cried out in frustration, dropping my hands as he disappeared. My cries deepened into a frenzy of panic and my eyes flew open. I clutched my blanket and stilled myself to calm my racing heart.

Just a dream. Always just a dream."

Rose Wintersong didn't have an ordinary upbringing. Raised in what most would call a hippy commune, but what is actually a powerful coven of witches, she never questions the life fate chose for her.

Until she meets Derek O'Conner.

Derek challenges everything Rose believes and forces her to see the secrets hidden beneath the whitewashed walls of her idyllic country life.

Rose knows she should walk away, that the sexy martial arts instructor is bad news bred to create discord in her tight community… but the animal magnetism between them is impossible to fight.

Caught between the passion of first love, and the steady beat of the life she's always known, Rose must choose between the innocence of her youth or the pleasures of womanhood—but lost innocence comes at a price, and Rose harbors a dark secret that could destroy everyone she loves—including Derek.

Submit to the Seduced Saga as Derek and Rose face their future while unraveling the mysteries of their past.

**My thoughts**

I have been reading Kimberly Kinrade for almost a year now. She warned us that this New Adult series was going to be hot, but I wasn't quite expecting this! When I think of New Adult books, I am still thinking YA, but with older characters and more adult situations. I really didn't expect ADULT situations! It almost felt out of place at first, but I think that is because I have been reading mostly her chapter books for kids as of late.

Once I readjusted my thoughts on Kimberly writing explicit sex scenes in her book, I was okay with it. I actually really like this story and had been pulled in from the first chapter teaser that she gave us when she started writing the book.

Derek and Rose are a modern day paranormal Romeo and Juliet. They are completely drawn to each other, physically, emotionally, mentally, and in a sense spiritually. They feel the completeness and very quickly fall in love. Only they don't realize that they are sworn enemies. The reader knows it from almost the very beginning, making you almost squirm with discomfort, knowing that their worlds are about to explode when they find out.

Their other unique problem is that they hardly dare to consummate their relationship, because Rose could literally kill him with her bare hands. She's afraid that he will hate her when he finds out. He is worried about revealing his true identity. But both of them think that the other one is "normal" and just won't understand what life is like having special powers. Apart of me was yelling in my head to just be honest with each other, already! Save yourselves the drama later on down the road! But for some reason, they just didn't listen to me...

This book is novella length, which makes it a quick and easy read. Chapters alternate with each character narrating from his or her point of view, and not just Derek and Rose. Their story is only just getting started and I can't wait to find out what else happens.

Interview with Paul T. Harry, author of 'The Garden'

Today, I would like to thank author Paul T. Harry for taking some time to answer questions about himself and his new book 'The Garden.' To enter the giveaway, click on "Rafflecopter" below.

What was the inspiration behind 'The Garden'?

When I ran across the original treatise depicting the story of Adam and Eve I was completely floored. Here was a depiction of Adam and Eve unlike anything I had ever heard or read, and I was immediately captivated by the drama and the humanity that lay within the tale. It immediately set my mind to wandering on what it must've been like for these two individuals to be sent here to Earth on a mission of staggering complexity and personal commitment. I mean, really, to enter into an agreement with God, to pledge themselves to the task of overseeing the development of mankind, with the goal of raising the consciousness of an entire species—what a story. It had everything, love, sex, betrayal, sacrifice, and redemption—all the great making of a movie or novel. All that was missing was a voice, someone who saw the story for what it was and wanted to bring these two people to life. And that's what I felt I had to do—I had to give this couple of voice. I had to bring them to life and retell the story of their lives as it really happened.

What do you hope readers will take away from your book?

First and foremost I want people to enjoy the story. Second, I want to open people's eyes to the possibility that there's more to the story of Adam and Eve than we ever imagined. And third, I want to amaze the reader by giving them a looking glass into the time and place that fully embraces where our ancestry began—a historical recreation explaining how the Cro-Magnon came into existence 40,000 years ago and how that event changed everything forever.

Did you find yourself relating to any particular character?

Most definitely—for this story to succeed I had to relate to both the main characters. I had to understand both Adam and Eve intimately if I was going to be successful in writing their biography. These two individuals had complex lives. They were not simple bumpkins who merrily went along with some simple plan to procreate the beginning of man on this planet. They were forced to endure a great deal and to flesh out these two characters it was necessary to understand the psyche of both of them. I needed to know what made them tick, what their strengths and weaknesses were, and I had to emphasize with both the male and female aspects of their thought processes.

What other projects do you currently have in the works?

I have another story that I've been toying with—a screenplay I want to turn into a novel. It's entitled Nanovision and it's the story of a young man named Daniel who is blinded and left for dead during a mob hit. Placed within the witness protection program by the FBI, Daniel is sent to northern California to live with an aunt he barely knows. Unbeknownst to him, his aunt is a scientist and CEO of a nano technology and a kook. Through experimentation the aunt give Daniel his sight back, but that is only the beginning.

You have written novels, screenplays, and short stories. Do you prefer one type over the other?

At this point in time I enjoy writing novels. I have Amazon to thank for that. They have leveled the playing field for authors.

What is your favorite work you have ever created?

THE 5 MOONS OF TIIANA, The Chronicles Rez Cantor. It is a fun, adventure filled saga about a man, given incredible obstacles to overcome, a Princess to save, and an empire to defeat. It was a blast to write (also available on Amazon) and I loved every minute.

How does your career as a music producer have an influence over your writing?

Not much anymore. It seems my music writing and producing occurred eons ago, and while it's something I treasure it's in the past where it will remain.

When not writing, what can you be found doing?

Mainly, I’m trying to keep up with everything that needs to be done—home, family, and bills.

What is something readers may be surprised to learn about you?

I have made my living in the gaming industry for 35 years dealing Craps, Blackjack, and other casino games, and yet I am not a gambler—it bores me to death. I work too hard for my money to throw it away on games of chance.

Anything else you would like to add?

Yes. While I realize that my story of Adam and Eve may step on some toes that is not my intention. My story is simply an alternative to the one that is told in Genesis. It is a story that offers a blending of both scientific fact and religious lore. To some that may seem offensive, I certainly hope not. However, I would like to offer one point of reprieve. After reading this novel, go take a look at Genesis, read what it says and see for yourself if all the chapters and phrases don't make a little more sense. If you do you may understand the biblical story supports mine and it may give you a deeper understanding of what happened back then. Either way, enjoy thank you.
