Top psychic spy Fay Avalon saw too much on her latest mind traveling mission and is now on the run from her post-catastrophic dystopian government, searching for the truth and proof. She escapes but is shot down, landing in the arms of the enemy.

In Drakker and Arlo’s world, women are so rare the men have accepted a polyandrous lifestyle. When the brothers stumble upon Fay unconscious in the wreckage of an aircraft, they are immediately attracted to her. Arlo wants to keep her, but Drakker knows they can’t. They must take her to their brother Logan Abán, leader of their people.

Logan struggles with trusting anyone, even himself. When a beautiful, intelligent, and intriguing woman falls into their laps, his denied desires for intimacy challenge his need to trust the spy. He’s frustrated by romantic Arlo’s claims of her innocence. Even when pragmatic and dominating Drakker defends her as well, Logan refuses to trust his gut.

Can one woman satisfy the diverse desires of three men? Will Logan’s fears be realized by betrayal? Is Fay to be sentenced to death as a spy, suffer a fate worse than death by being returned to her government as a traitor, or will she find a new life and love as the wife of three sexy brothers?

EXCERPT

“I never do what’s anticipated.” He pulled her closer into his chest and whispered in her ear. “It would make me boring and predictable.” He slipped his hands under her blouse and stroked his fingertips in seductive circles over her flesh. The passion in his eyes grew hotter. “I’ve desired you from the moment you walked through my front door.”

She widened her eyes in mock shock then shot her gaze over to Arlo. His raised brow and cocked head made her turn a frown back in Logan’s direction. “You said this was a game of truth.” She placed her hands over his, keeping them just below her breasts. “That’s a lie.”

“No, it isn’t.”

Logan, it was quite obvious to us all that morning the only thing you wanted to do to me was to interrogate me.” She looked at Arlo again. He shrugged and started singing another song. Coward. He was avoiding voicing his opinion.

“Then you’re all blind, because the first thing I truly wanted was to kiss those perfect lips. The second thing was to interrogate that succulent mouth of yours to make it tell me the truth about you.” He glided his touch around to the sides of her breasts.

Fay liked how his hands caressed her, and she wasn’t about to tell him to stop. His touch created a fire deep inside her, something she’d longed for all her life.

“Fay, a person can be suspicious of someone, but it doesn’t necessarily negate a very strong attraction to them. How do you think most assassins get in close for a kill? Their targets find them very attractive.”

“Hmm, didn’t think of that. What you say is true.” She felt his fingers stroke down her lower back to play with the laces holding her blouse closed. A subtle heat warmed her pussy. “I’ve known a few women who loved their husbands but didn’t trust them to be faithful.”

“See.” In one swift motion, he pulled at the laces and removed her blouse.

Logan,” Fay whispered. Arlo’s soft singing in the background reminded her they weren’t alone.

He trailed his seductive touch to her bra straps. Slipping his fingertips beneath the material he worked the silky strips off her shoulders. She crossed her arms over her breasts to stop him from removing it.

Logan, we can’t—”

He swept her deeper into his arms and stopped her words by pressing his mouth to her ear. “Tell me true…do you desire me?”

Without breaking his hold, she was able to brace a short distance between them, just enough to gaze into his eyes. “Truth?”

“Nothing but the truth shall ever pass between us.” He tilted his head forward and down, closing the space between them. He brushed his mouth softly against hers, merging their heat, and then did it again. He licked the seam of her lips, and she couldn’t help herself. It was a physical need. She granted his tongue entry.

Her bra fell free before she circled her arms around him. His touch ignited her flesh as he moved his fingers to the front of her jeans and worked her zipper until her pants dropped to the ground. “The truth is—” she murmured at the release of his lips.

“The truth,” he whispered in her ear. “Even though I fear my knees will fail me should you tell me I disgust you.” Logan cupped each breast before dropping his hands to stroke several gentle passes over her ass. He kissed and caressed, roaming his hands over her, although he did take care not to touch the area of her wound.

She stroked her nails up his back in wanton need, realizing if she were honest with herself, she felt the same desire for him she’d felt for Arlo and Drakker. “If my heart were to speak the truth, it would say you grabbed my sexual interest the moment I saw you in those tight white pants and red silk shirt.”

Her remark brought a proud smile to his lips. “Okay…so my clothes got you heated up.”

“No, it was the hard body beneath those clothes.”

“So…when did I capture your heart?”

“Honestly?”

“Honest.”

“When you became my hero.”

“I’m your hero? How? When?”

She smiled up at him. “Escaping the Nike silo. I still can’t believe you carried me all that way to safety.”

“How do you know that?”

“Whenever I woke up you were there, and Chandra confirmed it when I asked her.”

“Ah.” He smiled then frowned. “That was all it took?”

“Yes.”

“Funny, it happened for me then as well.”

“It did?”

“Yep, I knew in my gut I already loved you when you admitted you risked your life for me. That’s when I knew I couldn’t live without you. Hell, I didn’t want to ever let you go. It’s why I wouldn’t let anyone else carry you. You were mine. I knew somewhere within you, you had to love me. For you to sacrifice yourself like that…you had to love me.” Logan picked her up and carried her toward Arlo. “Honor me, brother. If you’re leg isn’t too bad, join me in pleasuring our woman tonight.”

Read an excerpt:
They sat on the swing in complete silence. The sky was beginning to darken. Burke put his arm around her, pulling her close. He could feel her tremble at his touch and it humbled him. He couldn’t remember a time when a woman had such a reaction to him. The urge to pick her up in his arms and carry her to his bed was strong but he didn’t dare. He didn’t think she was the type for a one-night stand and that was all he was willing to offer.

Although he found her damn attractive, she was off limits. All he needed equated to an unpaid housekeeper not a woman that probably had no practical skills, even so, she was very tempting. There seemed something so vulnerable about her that it made him long to protect her.

He made the mistake of looking down at her upturned face. Her luminous green eyes trapped him. Unable to resist the pull of her he carefully leaned down and brushed his lips against hers. He only intended for the kiss to be brief, but she tasted like honey and he had to have more.
Annie moaned as Burke kissed her again. He swiped his tongue along the seam of her lips, coaxing her mouth open and deepening the kiss. His arms tightened around her, pulling her close to him. She smelled of sunshine, sweet and warm. Reluctantly he let her go. Annie smiled back at him anyway, and it pleased him. She looked lovely in her yellow sundress with her curly auburn hair falling down her back, and he couldn’t help but admire her cute figure.
Gently, he removed her arms from around his neck and looked down at her with hooded eyes. Highly aroused by her, it was by sheer willpower that he stopped his advances. Her bruised lips looked inviting to him and her eyes shone with pleasure. God he wanted her. Burke smiled at her enthusiasm. The last woman in his house had overtly insulted every inch of it. He could hardly believe her reaction. She seemed genuine in her pleasure over everything. But, he reminded himself that it didn’t really matter. Burke grinned as he watched her scoop up the cat and whisper in its ear, her happiness so apparent. For a second he was glad that he adopted that ornery cat.

Regretfully, he stood up and moved away from her. “It’s been fun.”

“Yes it has,” Annie stood. She wobbled a bit and made her way to the porch stairs. She looked at Burke with her heart shining in her eyes. “Maybe you could consider me as a candidate for a wife?” she asked quietly.
He hesitated, not knowing what to say.
“Never mind.” She hurriedly rushed down the stairs to her car.
Maybe in another life, it would have worked, but he knew what the ending to their story would be.

'The Comanche Vampire' by Lee Ann Sontheimer Murphy

Blurb:

He’s a Comanche. He’s also a vampire. And Ned Big Eagle, also known as Pea’hocso, became one more than a century ago. Just after he surrendered as one of the last wild Comanche warriors to ride the plains, a woman turned him into a blood drinking immortal. Now that he’s become what never existed in Comanche folklore, Ned lives a solitary life on the edge of the Wichita Mountains. So far, he’s endured his eternal life but when he meets pretty history professor Anne Delahanty, she brings out emotions and desires he hasn’t known since he was still human. As they fall into both bed and love, he wants to tell her the truth but when he does, Anne doesn’t believe him. It takes a near tragedy to convince her and then she can’t deal. Ned has few options but he hopes he can convince her to join him in an everlasting undead love, Comanche style.

Read an excerpt:

“Wow,” she said, her gaze scanning him from his toes to his feathers. “You look amazing and authentic. On you, it looks so real and natural.”
It should, Ned thought, although he’d become as comfortable in his blue jeans and Western shirts. He liked the feel of the deerskin leggings against his flesh, the wind against his chest. He’d made the knife stuck in his belt. It along with his shield and lance were museum pieces. “Thanks,” he said. “Come on back to the lodge.”
Anne accepted his offered hand and walked with him to the secluded spot, already deep in shadow. Ned crouched down on his haunches to gauge the fire and decided the gray-white coals were ready to cook the meat. He snuck glances at Anne, dressed in khaki pants and a tank-top. She’d brushed her hair into a high ponytail and after a moment’s hesitation she sank to the ground and sat cross legged beside him. Anne craned her head back to gaze at the lodge. “Those are real, right?” she asked, pointing to his shield and lance.
“Yeah, family heirlooms,” Ned replied.
“What about the tipi?”
“It’s authentic but I made it. Took me a long time to get enough hides but I did.”
She came to her feet and inspected the lodge. “Are they all buffalo?”
“Yeah.” He’d been on some managed hunts at various lodges and places throughout the Southwest and West, something he didn’t enjoy as much as the genuine thing. To finish it, though, he’d taken a couple more from the protected herds, the ones grazing the preserve but he wasn’t admitting poaching to Anne or anyone else.
“And you did the work, all of it? Scraped the hides, tanned them, and sewed them together?”
Ned joined her beside his lodge. “I sure did and it was a helluva lot of work. Took me years to finish but it’s something I wanted.”
“It’s awesome. Do you ever sleep here?”
“Often. I thought we could tonight if you want.” Pink flushed her skin, subtle but noticeable. “I’d like that,” Anne said. “Can I go in?”
“Sure,” he said as he pulled aside the flap. “After you.”
Anne ducked her head and came into the conical interior. Ned tried to imagine how it must look to her modern eyes. Although he doubted it’d be cold enough, he’d laid a fire in the middle below the smoke hole and the bedding, a couple of buffalo robes and other skins, appeared inviting. His bow and quiver of arrows rested against one wall. The cooler he’d carried down with the steaks was the sole anomaly.
“It’s cozy,” Anne said. “And except for the ice chest, I feel like I’ve stepped back in time.”
“That’s the idea.” Ned pulled the meat out and carried it outside. He’d brought plates too, big paper platters they could toss. They weren’t either, but convenient. “I’m hungry, what about you?”
“I’m starving.” The way she said it made him think she craved sex as much as he did. There’d be time for that later, he thought, and headed back outside to throw the steaks into the flat iron pot. He’d put the potatoes into the ashes earlier and with any luck, they’d be done to a tasty turn about the same time as the steaks. Ned put the pan over the coals and let the steaks slow cook, searing first one side then the other. He added no seasoning until he removed them and then sprinkled a small amount of salt on each.
As he’d cooked, Anne shared her day with him. She told tales from the classroom and described the student who’d been hooted down after he’d informed the others Custer massacred the Indians at the Little Big Horn. She talked about her American Indian students and told Ned one of them planned to do his thesis on Quanah Parker’s surrender. “I told him I knew a descendent of Pea’hocso,” she said. “He seemed impressed. Actually, I mentioned it to the class and they were awed. They’d be even more if they saw you out here, like this. Maybe you could talk to my students about your ancestor sometime. It’d be great.”
Maybe so, but it’d be risky as well as a little scary. “I’m no man of letters,” Ned said. “I don’t know, Anne.”
“Just say you’ll think about it.”
Ned nodded. “Okay, I will.”
They ate the steaks and baked potatoes outside. Anne raved about the tenderness of the meat and the intense flavor of the grass fed locally raised buffalo. Her delight made Ned happy. They ate the steaks, devoured the potatoes with nothing but a bit of salt. It was the best meal he’d had in ages, made better with Anne’s company. After the meal they sat out beneath the stars, talking. Ned kept Anne within the curve of his arm, her body leaned against his. The delicious taste of the meat lingered on his tongue and he smoked a cigarette, somnolent and lazy. The smoke lifted toward the heavens in slow spirals. He’d taken blood in sufficient quantity the night prior and all Ned’s wants were sated but one and he’d meet it soon.
He savored the anticipation, enjoyed the sweet torture of waiting to make his body and hers into one. Time stretched into momentary infinity as Ned willed these moments to continue. If he could stop time, he would and remain in this now forever. If only this could be his eternity, he wouldn’t mind being immortal so much. Ned stared upward at the star filled sky and the truth came to him. It struck with force and hugeness strong enough to rob his breath for some seconds. He tried to deny it, blame it on the moonlight but he couldn’t. Certain she’d never understand but possessed of need to speak it, Ned stroked back Anne’s hair and whispered words he’d never said to any woman but one, “U kamkuto nu.”
No one much spoke Comanche any longer so he figured she wouldn’t understand but he’d made a mistake. Her body stiffened as she twisted her head to look into his eyes. Kee!” she exclaimed, ‘no’ in his first tongue but in a way he took to mean ‘yes’.
Haa,” Ned said to affirm it. He hadn’t spoken the words in so long, not since before any living person on the earth had been born, but he meant them. Speaking them moved him and brought thick tears into his throat until he doubted he could say more now. Joy lit Anne’s features with a soft beauty. Her hand cupped his cheek and she smiled at him. “I’m glad, Ned,” she whispered. “I love you too.”

A conversation with author Rich Marcello

What was the inspiration behind The Color of Home?
The Color of Home is the first of three books I’m writing about different kinds of love. The Big Wide Calm was just published in July 2014, and The Beauty of the Fall will be out in 2015. I had the story for The Color of Home in my head for a long time. Basically, I wanted to write down everything I believed about what it would mean to be in a long term healthy relationship. In the story, Nick and Sassa go through a lot as the story unfolds, but in the end ( and I won’t tell you if they end-up together or not), they’ve both grown to the point where they know who they are, what they believe, and what it means to truly and deeply love.
Which character spoke to you the most?
I love all of my characters equally. With that said, The Color of Home is really Nick and Sassa’s story, so I guess those two spoke to me the most.
What is one of your favorite scenes?
I like the scene where Rachel is first introduced into the story. She was a fun character to write. Honest. Direct. Loves Music. Loves tantric sex. There may be a whole novel about her down the road.
Will we ever see these characters again?
Except for Rachel, probably not. At one point, I thought writing more about the main characters, but when I finished the book it was clear to me that the story of Nick and Sassa had ended.
On what other projects are you currently working?
As I mentioned earlier, The Big Wide Calm just came out, and The Beauty of the Fall will be out next year. I plan to write for the rest of my life, and I figure I have a good ten novels in me. Once I finish the trilogy on love, I’ll pick my next project. In general, I like writing literary fiction where I can explore the emotional, psychological, and philosophical aspects of my characters. And I like stories where the characters, while under significant pressure, are tested in each of those dimensions.
You write in a variety of ways: books, songs, poetry. What does each mean to you?
They are all inter-related. I started off as a songwriter many years ago, and music fills my first two novels. But I’ve also written and published a lot of poetry, which it turns out, is a key component in my novels. In The Color of Home, I would sometimes spend an hour or two on a paragraph just to make sure that it sounded poetic enough. In finding my voice as a writer, all three have played a big role.
When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
Back in college, my English professor told me he would teach me to write novels if I changed my major from Engineering to English. I was broke at the time, so I stayed in engineering, but I knew then that I would eventually return to writing.
From where do you get your best ideas?
From dreams. I tend to write early in the morning each day, so in a way, writing is just continuation of dreaming from the night before. I find that my best ideas come from that dream-like place where, once I have the voice of a character, I can imagine what he or she might do under a wide range of circumstances.
What is the best writing advice you have ever received?
Write the first pass quickly, then rewrite until you are sensuously transported into the scene.
I see that Pearl Jam is one of your favorite bands. They are my all-time favorite band, touching my life in every way. How does your love of music impact your life?
Pearl Jam is a great band. There’s something timeless about their music which is a characteristic all great bands seem to have. I love music and it’s a big part of my life each day. I have a recording studio in my house where I write many of my songs. I am constantly listening to new bands. At my house. When I’m driving. Live. Wherever, really. I can’t imagine a life that wasn’t filled with music. It’s been an incredible gift for me, and transformative in so many ways.
When not writing, what can you be found doing?
Playing and listening to music. Reading. Working out. Theatre. Ballet. Hanging out in Harvard square. Drinking much too espresso. Watching New England sports. Walking my dog, Shaman.
Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thanks for the opportunity to speak with you, and for the great questions.
Thank you so much for your time!

About the author:

If Rich Marcello could choose only one creative mentor, he'd give the role to Jonathan Richmond and the Modern Lovers. This is not only because he currently resides in New England, where Jonathan started, but because of his life as a contemporary fiction author, poet and songwriter, whose literary inspiration often stems from songs he's written. Rich grew up in New Jersey surrounded by song and word.

For a while it seemed right to travel the musician's path, especially during his stint in his college folk group, at The University of Notre Dame, where he wrote and recorded his first original songs. But, as is true for many musicians, graduation led him down a different road, one on which he found his love for high technology. There, he enjoyed a successful career as a technology executive, managing several multi-billion dollar businesses for Fortune 500 companies.

During his time in technology he never stopped creating art, and eventually his love for song and the written word grew to the point where he walked away from his first career to pursue poetry, song, and fiction with the same enthusiasm and discipline he demonstrated in business. In The Color Of Home, his literary voice melds all three together with honest generative dialogue, poetic sensory detail, and “unforgettable characters who seem to know the complete song catalog of Lennon or Cohen.”

He’s currently working on his third novel, The Beauty of the Fall.

'The Big Wide Calm' by Rich Marcello

Blurb:

Paige is a rock star. The world just doesn’t know it yet. She’s got the charisma, the drive, and, of course, the mega-musical skills. All she needs is to make her debut album, one that will change the world, inspire revolutions—and make her galactically famous along the way.

When John Bustin, a former semi-famous singer/songwriter offers to record Paige’s album for free, it feels like destiny, like the next step on her way to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Guitar in hand, Paige sets off to John’s recording compound, ready to unfold her future.

But the ever-elusive John, with his mysterious history, and Paige, a big dreamer but naïve about her footing in life, clash as much as they coalesce. Before they can change the world through Paige’s music, the improbable duo must learn to work together.

A coming of age story and retrospective, The Big Wide Calm focuses on human nature and the complexities of love through the eyes of young and old on the journey of creating the perfect album.
