"Why I Love Werewolves" by Augusta Hill, author of 'What Might Be'

Why I Love Werewolves

Werewolves are, in many ways, a great representation of what it feels like to be different. They are the outcasts, trying to figure out their place in a world dominated by ‘normal’ humans. I think that is why I’ve always been interested in them; werewolves strike a chord with all of us who have experienced times of loneliness or confusion. They are often lost in society, but also have special traits that make them interesting and powerful.

I’ve never known what it is like to be able to shape-shift (how I wish I could though!). Yet, I’ve often been the odd one out. As a child I was the friendly but nerdy kid who would rather read than play at recess. Even as an adult, I spend more time in my head working out my book plots than I spend talking to real people. The isolation of the werewolf, and feeling more comfortable when in nature or by myself, hits home for me.

When I started my most recent novella, I wanted to explore these feelings. I started out with a contemporary romance between two humans, but it just didn’t express what I wanted. I felt stuck in a rut and almost abandoned the project. However, luckily for me, I soon afterwards read a paranormal romance and everything clicked together. I realized that shifters were far from being two-dimensional fairy tale characters – they had a complex history that was perfect for discussing solitude (both positively and negatively).

Thus, Alik, the hero of my novella What Might Be, was born. He is sweet, funny, and kind, but also very awkward. He is not your typical guy, even amongst the werewolves; he is self-conscious but truly generous with his heart. This touch of awkwardness, being stuck between the wolf world and human world, is my favorite trait of his. It makes him so relatable, and you can’t help but want to cheer him on while he tries to find happiness. He was such fun to write (and daydream about)!

I hope that when readers check out my series, The Volkov Chronicles, they feel like kindred spirits to this loveable family of werewolves trying to find a place to truly belong. The series will span hundreds of years of history, from modern day Oregon to Ancient Constantinople, all while exploring what it means to be different in society. It’s a project that is close to my heart, and I hope it brings smiles and nods of recognition from readers who emphasize with the characters.

About the Author

Augusta loves to travel almost as much as she loves to read – and she really loves to read. Her journeys through the Middle East, South America, Europe, and Asia have all inspired her stories and the wonderful characters in them. She can’t help but have a tiny belief in magic, and is always open to learning something new. When not writing, she can be found drinking copious amounts of hot chocolate in her favorite cafĂ©.

You can follow her on Goodreads or Facebook.

Blurb:

“You’re a breath of joy, Nell. That’s the most tempting thing in the world.”

Nell desperately needs to write a hit, or her romance career will be even deader than her love life. Her grandfather's quirky cabin is the perfect writer's retreat, but it turns out life in the woods isn't as distraction-free as she'd hoped. How can she concentrate on writing with Alik the local park ranger's sweet and sexy ways finding a place in her heart, no matter how hard she tries to focus?

What she doesn't realize is that his easygoing friendship comes with a difficult choice. He has a dark secret tied to the moon, and when fame and fortune come calling for Nell, she'll have to decide between the glitzy life she knew, and the man she's come to love.

This is the first of the Volkov series, however this paranormal romance novel can be read as a stand alone. It is a self-contained HEA.

'Affairs & Atonement' by Clarissa Cartharn

Blurb:

What do you do when your first love returns with the hopes of a second chance?

A SECOND CHANCE LOVE STORY, A FIRST-LOVE ROMANCE

He married her at eighteen and then she disappeared hours into their marriage.

That was eleven years ago and Ashton Pryor was certain he was over Christy Huntley. He had moved on. He got engaged.

But old ties have to be severed first before new ones can be made. Now he needed to find Christy more than ever. He needed to divorce her to marry Naomi Landon.

Read an excerpt:
She made a good effort to ignore Ashton which only irked him more. He followed her around the kitchen as she tidied it up, clearing away all remnants of their dinner.

“Do you need to put these away too?” he asked, pointing at the candlestick holder.
She shook her head. “No,” and then continued on quietly at stacking the plates in the dishwasher.
“What about these placemats?”
“If you don’t mind putting them in the drawer there, please?” She pointed out to him.
He collected them, perking his lips as he glanced over at her.
“This one?” he asked, standing next to a set of draws.
“Yes.”
“The top one?”
“The second one.”
“From the bottom?”
“From the top.”
“On the left?”
“Yes.”
“This left?”
She clenched her fingers, taking in a deep breath. “Yes.”
“It’s a large drawer. Where do you want me to put it?”
She marched over to him and took the placemats from him. “They’re just placemats, Ashton.”
She threw them into the drawer and slammed it shut before turning back to her dishes again.
He ambled up to her, leaning against the sink bench, watching her. Her body swayed to and fro as she scrubbed vigorously at a pot. Her movements raised an uneasy spark in him, recollecting memories of her when she swayed to a different beat on that first night when she solely belonged to him. He shuffled his feet, crossing his legs to ease the discomfiture he was beginning to feel between them.
“Must you stand there?” she grumbled.

“Excuse me?” He cleared his throat.
“You’ve been standing there, staring at me. And it’s making me uncomfortable.”
“I thought we could talk…”
“I’d rather not,” she cut him. “At least, not now.” She wiped her hands and moved away from him, trying to maintain a safe distance between them.
Each movement she made, the way she ran her hand over her dark hair, biting the corner of her trembling lower lip, excited him. He would never have thought he would notice such minute gestures in her. He was meant to sever all ties with her. Instead, he was finding that he was tangling himself in his own desires for her.
