Best Friend's Sister (A Billion Scandals Novel) by L.A. Pepper

“He’s a player. He has a different girl every weekend. He’s famous for it.”
Those words from my brother about his best friend should have sent me running.
Instead, I gave him my v-card.

Duke Esposito is every definition of a bad idea.
He was like none of the boys I’d ever met before—wild and free.

I wanted him.
I wanted him to be the one.

But as expected, I ended up with a broken heart,
And if that humiliation wasn’t enough,
Cut to a few years later and the bastard didn’t even remember who I was.

I should have learned...yet here I am with a giant FAKE engagement ring on my finger from HIM.
One minute I’m standing my ground with the mafia,
And the next, Duke-Freaking-Esposito is barging through my restaurant door,
Pretending to be my fake fiancé and planting a kiss on my lips so spectacular I think I actually sighed out loud.

I may have ended up in a mess way over my head,
But this time—I’m keeping my emotions and hormones out of the equation.
Only, he’s made it clear that this time—he’s playing for keeps.

Should I give him another chance?
Or will Duke break my heart again…

Bound to Protect (Crescent City Kings) by Anya Summers

Welcome Anya Summers back to the blog with yet another book in her Crescent City Kings series! Read an excerpt from Bound to Protect and then follow the tour for even more! Remember to leave your questions and comments along the way. Best of luck entering the great giveaway!

The weight of the world on her shoulders…

Sabrina Thomas needs to catch a break. By day she juggles two jobs, only to head home at night to care for her mentally ill brother. With their parents gone, the responsibility for his care, the doctor’s bills, the hospital stays, the at home care, falls to her. Six months ago, the trust fund their parents left them dried up and with the mounting bills, she has until the end of the month to make good on late rent payments before they are evicted. Sabrina knows where she could make a lot of quick cash with her looks: Bayou Sin, the classiest strip joint on Bourbon Street. But her plans go awry when Dante hauls her off the stage and takes her to his penthouse.

His lifestyle called into question…

Billionaire Michael Fitzgerald and his partner in crime, Dante Rousseau, have been topping submissives together for years. As the owner of the fifth largest sugarcane supplier, with a host of multi-conglomerate corporations to run, Michael has always kept his bedroom preferences under wraps. When a rival on the board attempts to engage in a hostile takeover and have Michael expelled from his own company, he knows he needs to find a woman he can trust to pretend to be his fiancée and put the kibosh on the illicit rumors spreading like wildfire through the company’s board members. When Dante shows up with their housekeeper, Sabrina, who is spitting mad at being denied the opportunity to make some fast cash, Michael knows she is just the woman for the job.

An offer neither can refuse…

Michael and Dante make Sabrina a deal: pretend to be Michael’s sole love interest for thirty days to dispel the rumors and stop the takeover. In exchange, they will pay her ten million dollars at month’s end. But the lines soon become blurred as to what is real and what is make believe. And when their time together is up, will they be able to walk away, or will they take the chance to make their relationship the real deal?

Read an excerpt:
Brad Coldwell, the CFO of Fitzgerald-Logan Realty, added, with a pensive, concerned expression on his face, “Now, we plan on conducting a discreet investigation over the next thirty days. If these claims are true, we will be forced to take action at that time.” Michael could tell that the matter troubled the longtime associate of the realty company. His salt and pepper hair looked like he had been running a frustrated hand through it all morning.

“I can promise you those claims aren’t true. In fact, I will be announcing my engagement shortly,” Michael lied through his teeth, and kept his face stone cold as he surveyed his board. He wondered which one of them was the culprit behind the claims. At this time, they were all suspect. And he hated that because, until this meeting, he had considered the people in this room to be individuals he trusted—otherwise they wouldn’t be on the board. It was true he didn’t care much for Dan personally, but he knew the work Dan did for his company, and that he was at the top of his game.

“Oh, really? I hadn’t heard you were dating anyone,” Dan stated with a hard gleam.

The man always had been a sanctimonious asshole. Once Michael got past this blip, he would see about replacing the ingrate. Keeping his tone smooth as butter yet with an edge of steel behind it, Michael said, “That’s because she is no one you know, Dan. We’ve kept our relationship low key and out of the press.”

“Well, that’s wonderful news,” Robert said, with relief covering his expression, “And if that’s the case, we can put this nasty business behind us.”

“And who, might I ask, is she?” Dan asked with a tick in his jaw.

The fucking bastard was trying to shove Michael out of his own company. The company his grandfather and father had built. Fucking prick. “Look for the announcement in the papers next week.”

Read an excerpt from Say You Love Me (The Reclaiming Heaven Duet) by E.R. Whyte

Forbidden love. Dangerous followers. A relationship that will pull more than her body into the spotlight.

Eighteen-year-old Gunner Ford is a hopeless romantic. After his best friend’s older sister kissed him on a dare five years ago, he lost his heart to her completely. But when his friends take him to a strip club to celebrate his birthday, his dreams evaporate as he sees his perfect woman performing onstage.

Shiloh Brookings believes that family comes first. So when her teacher’s salary won’t cover her brother’s medical bills, she takes a second gig as an exotic dancer to pay off his debt. But her worst fear is realized when she spots a senior from her high school sitting in the crowd.

Determined to help her, Gunner renews their friendship while he secretly longs for the off-limits apple of his eye. And as Shiloh draws dangerously closer to the sweet young man, a stalker dogs her every move and threatens much more than her employment.

Will this student-teacher connection result in a deadly lesson?

Say You Love Me is the first book in the tense Reclaiming Heaven contemporary romance duet. If you like unforgettable characters, steamy tension, and slow-burn suspense, then you’ll adore E.R. Whyte’s irresistible story.

Read an excerpt:
I place one hand on the door jamb above her head and lean in, inhaling her nerves. She doesn’t give an inch of ground. I smile, a slow curl of my lips. “Shiloh.”

“Don’t call me that.” She probably hates the slight quaver in her voice but gives no sign. Instead, she tips her chin up in response to that primal something she can feel arcing between us. I know she can feel it. Damnit, if I can feel it every time we get close to each other, there’s no way she isn’t feeling it, too. Her pragmatism is no doubt telling her to lock it down. My bet is that the woman in her is telling her something very different.

“Do you have any idea how f*cking hot it makes me when you get all prissy and schoolmarm-ish on me?”

“Gunner!” she gasps, placing a hand on my chest to shove me away. I hold my position. “I just want to put my hand on your thigh… right about here... ” I demonstrate with a light graze, then return my hand to the door jamb. “…and pull that skirt up an inch at a time… pull those sexy glasses off your face…” Her eyes are fixed on my throat, her lips parted. I can feel her breath ghosting the surface of my skin as she breathed in and out. “I just want to break that propriety you pull so tight around you, Shiloh. Watch you splinter.”

Say You Love Me is the first book in the tense Reclaiming Heaven contemporary romance duet. If you like unforgettable characters, steamy tension, and slow-burn suspense, then you’ll adore E.R. Whyte’s irresistible story.

Read an excerpt:
I sigh, the sound a susurration in the silence. Using the provided remote, I dim the lighting to its lowest setting and turn the music on. The sultry notes of Portishead’s ‘Glory Box’ fill the small space and I begin with a measured walk behind Gunner, approaching slowly. This will be easier if I don’t have to look him in the eye. I pause when I’m behind him, uncertain, and then hesitantly place my hands on either side of his head and run my fingers through his hair. It’s thick and soft to the touch, and I can feel nerves radiating up through my hands as I connect with him. He’s nervous, too, I realize.

The realization gives me courage, and I continue.

“Tell me why. Why a lap dance? Why me?” I ask. “Somebody got you hot and bothered?” He tenses when I trail my fingers down the side of his neck and along his outstretched arm but doesn’t answer.

I walk in front of him. “Need to let off a little steam?” I press. “A little frustration?” I stand for a moment in front before him, meeting his eyes through the black of my mask. How can he keep up this charade? Pretend that we’re strangers, that this is okay? My heart thuds in my chest in tune with Portishead’s sultry chorus, and I close my eyes. I can’t look at him.

This dance will change everything in profound ways, I know. It’s an admission. A confession. Yes, I feel it, too. Yes, I want you.

I drag my hands over my sides and up, up along the swells of my breasts, my neck, my cheeks and into my hair. “Do you need to be in charge?” My last question is a whisper.

Beth Gibbons’ round tones fill every corner of the small room and the nuanced beat thrums in my blood. Give me a reason / to love you / Give me a reason to be / a woman.

I place one hand on his shoulder and begin to sway, shoulders and hips moving in languid counterpoint as I rock closer. He reaches out to touch me and I move his hand firmly back to his lap.

Retreating, I lower myself to my knees, reach beneath my tee shirt, and unhook my bra with clumsy fingers. He’s focused intently on me, mouth unsmiling. How is he so composed? I’m a mass of nerves. Masking my turmoil with a smile that taunts, I whip the bra out from beneath my tee and swiftly flick it at him.

And then, mind made up, I lower myself to all fours and begin to prowl toward him.

Billionaire's Baby Secret by LA Pepper Kindle Countdown Sale!

“Your mom was right about you, you’re a troublemaker.”I’ll never forget those teasing words.
He was forbidden fruit, a completely off limits temptation I knew could destroy me.

Not only was he my dad's best friend,
He’s the father to my very secret baby.

It wasn't supposed to feel right when he touched me.
It was supposed to be one night of passion.

A secret…a scandal that we’d never tell.
So the moment I found out I was pregnant,
I ran.
Left without a word.

I thought I'd escaped my past when fate brings us back to New York,
And face to face with the man I left behind.

He's still single, and every bit the center of every one of my fantasies.

The moment our eyes meet,
I fall all over again.

There are going to be questions...lot's of them.

How do I tell him that our one scandalous night year ago,
Resulted in one hell of a secret?

Return of the Wolfe by Nancy Fraser

Today we welcome author Nancy Fraser back to the blog! Today you can check out an excerpt from her contemporary romance Return of the Wolfe! Then be sure to follow the rest of the tour for more and let her know what you think along the way. Plus you get extra chances to enter the great giveaway!

Ever since she was a teenager, Sarah Tremayne wanted one thing and one thing only—to be a park ranger at Big Bear National Park in Bear Lake, Wisconsin. Her dream was always to work along side her ranger brother, Brent, and be the first brother-sister team in department history.

Matthew Wolfe is also a ranger and Brent’s best friend. He tolerated Sarah when she was a gangly teen following him around the park like a lost puppy. However, as Sarah blossomed so did his desire.

Just as they’re exploring their mutual attraction, a tragic accident pulls them apart.

Four years have passed and Matthew is returning to Big Bear as the man in charge. Will he and Sarah be able to mend their ragged fences and rediscover what they once had? Or, will Sarah’s pain and anger force her away from Big Bear, and Matt, forever?

Read an excerpt:
Matt wanted to touch her, shake her, make her understand. He wanted to protest, to yell, to demand she stay and talk to him, but he knew he lacked the inner strength necessary to carry out the actions; to upset her even more.

"Yes, Ranger Tremayne," he said finally, "you're excused."

She nodded. "Thank you." She took two steps toward the door and then turned back. "Sir?"

His gaze lifted to hers. "Yes, Sarah?"

"I submitted a transfer request day before yesterday. I'd appreciate it if you could attend to it as soon as possible."

He studied her expression, hoping to see some emotion, some signal that would tell him she wasn't serious. Instead, he saw only anger and pain. Her hands were still clenched at her sides, her lips still pursed tightly no doubt in an effort to arrest the telltale trembling. Her pulse fluttered erratically beneath the smooth line of her throat. With each heartbeat he imagined her tears came closer to falling with nothing more than her hatred keeping them in check.

A searing flash of remorse jolted his body centered directly around his heart. His response to her request was slow in coming, drawn out by the magnitude of his pain. "If that's what you want, Sarah."

He watched her carefully, hoping for some show of regret, some possible sign of forgiveness. She only nodded and moved through the door and into the hallway.

How could he possibly make up for all the pain he had caused her? Would Sarah ever trust and care for him again?

Or, was returning to Big Bear the biggest mistake of his life?

Review of Born for Leaving by Jude Munro

Welcome to the review tour for Born for Leaving by Mia Kerick writing as Jude Munro. I'm a longtime fan of Mia Kerick, so was excited to see a new title and intrigued by a pseudonym. Read on for an excerpt, as well as my thoughts. Follow the tour for even more reviews and to leave questions and comments for the author along the way. Be sure to enter the great giveaway!

When they say be careful what you wish for, do you pay attention?
Neither did Oliver Tunstead.

Oliver wishes for nothing more than to get his mind off his crappy bartending job, pile of debt big enough to swallow him whole, and playboy ex-boyfriend/boss who refuses to back off. Too bad distractions, like the hot little convertible he has his eye on, cost megabucks. And Oliver is flat broke. Renting the spare bedroom in his rundown beachfront cottage is his only option to pick up the cash he needs—a risky proposition, as Oliver is the polar opposite of a people-person. When he responds to a bizarre ad in the Waterfront Gazette seeking summer housing, he gets more than he bargained for. But Oliver can cope… After all, how much harm can a single quirky tenant do to his tightly guarded life in three short months?

Where Oliver is a loner by design, urban cowboy Bodie is a loner by necessity. A family dispute long ago dropkicked him onto the path of a lifelong wanderer. This changes when Bodie moves into the tiny beachfront cottage and starts working the door at Oliver’s bar.

Despite Oliver and Bodie’s nearly paralyzing instinct to avoid commitment, they fall into a wary romance. And to their surprise, life as a couple is sweetly satisfying; that is, until their jealous boss devises a cruel plan to destroy the tentative bond they’ve built. True to form, Bodie hits the road, leaving Oliver to lick his wounds alone.

Can these wounded souls defy their urge to flee and fight for love?

Read an excerpt:
“He wants to date you. Am I right?”

“Date me?” Bodie replies. “I’d say he wants something else.”

I nod. “You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to.”

“In theory.”

“I mean, just tell him you’re not gay. That pretty much closes the door to what Jack’s interested in.”

“But I am gay.”

I hate myself for gasping, but I do because this complicates things. For Bodie, with regard to Jack. And for me, because I’m starting to feel things for him I shouldn’t. “Uh…did you tell Jack that you’re gay?”

“He asked. I answered.” Direct, as always.

“You don’t owe him your private information.”

Again, he shrugs. “I don’t hide who I am.”

“Well, maybe you should have.” Jack won’t leave him alone now. He’ll interpret Bodie’s lack of interest as some kind of warped challenge.

And then Bodie does the strangest, most unexpected thing. He reaches out, hesitates with his arm midair, and takes my hand. He’s shaking. “I need this job, Ollie.”

“Fucking Jack Wheeler,” I mutter. “He’s such an asshole to put you in this position. I’ll talk to him.”

“I fight my own battles.” His words are clipped.

“I believe you. But please, let me try to help.”

He ignores my plea. “You used to be Jack’s guy, huh?” Bodie’s eyes narrow.

“Did he tell you that?”

“Yep.” He nods. “Do you still want to be his?”

“Not if he was the last man on earth.” I’m surprised at how certain I am about this.

Bodie’s half grin appears and his eyes pop wide. “Good.”

“Why’s that good?”

“Got my reasons.” He continues to smile.

“Care to share them with your housemate?” I squeeze his hand, flirting. I’m scared of his reply as much as I’m desperate for it.

“Here’s my answer.” Bodie pulls his hand from my grasp and places it gently on the side of my face. And he leans in for a kiss. Soft, but not tentative. Just a brush of his lips to mine and, when he pulls back, it’s only by a few inches. I feel his breath on my lips, so sweet and light. Patient too. As if considering whether we fit together.

I nod and he moves even closer. More unified breathing, and the most emotional intimacy I’ve shared with another man—and we’re fully dressed on a beach, not naked in bed. I press my lips to his, but he pulls back.

“Let me do it,” he whispers against my parted lips, and I understand that this kiss is his ballgame, not mine.

Another feathery kiss to my lips and then another. Fingertips brush my cheek, the side of my neck, my chest on top of my thin T-shirt, drawing out goosebumps up and down my arms and along my spine.

I struggle to control my breathing, as a realization hits me: This weathered cowboy isn’t tough and cool, through and through. Bodie’s just a man, like me. With his share of hopes and fears and needs. A man who requires protection, as much as he is a protector.

**My thoughts**
I have been a fan of Mia Kerick's for a while now. She has a great way of sharing the stories of teens and young/new adults in the LGBTQ+ community that really grab at your heartstrings. So I was interested to try out an adult book under her pseudonym.

I read the book easily in one afternoon while sitting near the pool. I wasn't as invested in these characters as I am with the younger ones in her other books, yet I was compelled to finish the book as quickly as I could so that I could find out what was going to happen with this couple. I think the difference for me is these are older men in a different place in their life.

Each of them come to the table with their own personal baggage and trauma. They have both been abused in different ways and have a lot of healing to do. In fact, Bodie's trauma is so intense that people say he is "born for leaving," as he never stays in one place for too long, trying to run away from his past. The two of them are actually quite good for each other, but it is going to take some time to find their way.

As they are going through their own personal battles and facing their own demons, they are also dealing with a horrific boss, Jack, who reminds me of some real creeps I have known in restaurants and bars over the years. There are a couple of other creeps, but the rest of the supporting characters are actually quite fabulous. I think I would actually enjoy hanging out with all of them, with the exception of Jack.

You're going to go through a lot of emotions while reading this book, but it is an entertaining and different love story. I'm looking forward to seeing where this series goes in the future. Thank you to the author and to Goddess Fish for providing me with a requested review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

About the author:

Like Jude Munro, her fictional characters in her gay romance novels are drawn to the beach. They’ve sunbathed on the sands of many alluring East Coast beaches, along with the fantastical beaches in Jude’s books. They’ll answer questions like “Who do you think you are, the sun god?” (which they often resemble) if they can hear you over "Boys of Summer" cranking on their headphones. To most of Jude’s men, no shoes and no shirt is really not a problem. But even on the sunniest of beach days, the guys in Jude’s books do have problems… as in, serious relationship issues. Many of which seem insurmountable. And each character must earn his day at the beach. (Yes, there is always a HEA).

Review of Internship With the Devil by Jaqueline Snowe

Welcome to the book blast for Internship With the Devil by Jaqueline Snowe! I'm a huge fan of her books, so I am excited to bring you this one today. I have an excerpt plus my thoughts on the story. Be sure to check out the rest of the tour for more and let her know what you think along the way. Best of luck in the giveaway!

Grace Turner scores the opportunity of a lifetime interning with an Ex-NFL player. But working under Brock Anderson turns out to be the job from hell. The hometown hero turned athletic trainer has a reputation as the best in his field, but his volatile personality makes working with him miserable.

Despite the animosity between them, he’s highly respected in his field and interning under him could mean everything for her career. The long days, longer nights, injuries, and buses filled with smelly athletes are the easy part. The biggest battle is the unwarranted attraction to Brock that she can’t seem to shake.

But as Grace spends more and more time with her brooding boss, she uncovers that his abrasive nature is deep rooted in his grief—something she’s no stranger to.

The glimpses of the man beneath the harsh exterior Brock presents to the world leave Grace conflicted in her feelings for him. As the internship draws to a close, Grace is faced with a choice that could set her future on an entirely new course.

Read an excerpt:

“Please,” I scoffed. “People watch you all the time. You must know that. You’re this presence that people like watching. I don’t know. You’re fascinating.” He blinked slowly a couple times, making me feel all sorts of nervous. “Nevermind.”

“No, finish your thought. I’m curious.” He nudged me with his leg and raised his dark brows.

“Fishing for compliments, Brock?” I teased, but stopped when his expression turned serious. My stomach soured, empathy taking over. This was a guy who thought very low of himself since the accident. As tough and intelligent as he was, he was a little broken inside. “You handsome, silly man.”

One side of his lip curled up, but those dark blues eyes waited for me to continue. I put my small hand on his arm this time, squeezing him. “No one watches you with pity, Brock. If that’s what you’re thinking. They watch you with awe and pride. Here you are, in the prime of most men’s athletic years working your ass off for a sport you were forced to give up. You’re amazing, really. You’re intelligent, everyone who works around you admires the hell out of you, and you refused to let life get the best of you. You help the dumbasses like Q and Chip, make sure your staff is treated fairly, and you helped me with this project which you had no obligation to do. You’re a good guy, Brock. Sometimes, I think you forget that.”

My heart pounded as his face fell slightly, his lips pressing together so hard they turned white. His eyes shattered me and I panicked, needing to ease the tension. I patted his knee with a shaking hand. “Although, you can be a bit grumpy.”

**My thoughts**
I love reading Jaqueline Snowe's books, so I was thrilled to see a new one available. This one holds true to her style of writing about young adults involved in sports on some level. But it also strays from what I'm used to as this one has more of a slow burn between the main characters. And I was okay with that.

I think Grace is my favorite female lead so far in Snowe's books. She was forced into independence by being orphaned by the age of 18. An accident in her past also gave her some minor physical restrictions in life that she has been able to overcome through sheer determination. She has an amazing strength about her. But she is also soft inside and vulnerable.

When we meet Brock, she has dubbed him Asshole Anderson, and for good reason. He is just belligerent and cranky and a slave driver. But you do get the sense right away that there is good reason for it. We know that he was injured and his football career was cut short. But there's more there.

The two of them are perfect for each other. They innately understand each other, even if they don't realize it, because they have both been through serious tragedies in their lives. Grace has a light about her that can bring Brock out of his darkness. And he is able to teach her so much about herself and help her achieve her dream in life.

I love watching their relationship ebb and flow, even if it is frustrating at times. I've been around those men who seem to swing back and forth in their affections. So I understood a lot of what Grace was going through with this and in other aspects of her life.

At the end of the book, Snowe suddenly shifts gears to her more usual smoldering style of storytelling. I almost felt like the last part of the book felt a little out of place with the way the rest of the story was unfolding and perhaps I was reading a different story. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this story and devoured it in one evening.

Thank you to the author and to Goddess Fish for providing me a requested review copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Right to Remain Silent by Anya Summers

Anya Summers is back with a new installment of her contemporary erotic series Crescent City. Enjoy an excerpt from The Right to Remain Silent before you download your own copy. And then be sure to follow the tour for even more! Leave questions and comments along the way and enter the giveaway!

The Right To Remain Silent

He never expects to find her there…

Officer Quinten Blackthorne is working undercover to bring the Rudnikov Mob Empire to its knees. He never expects to find his best friend’s baby sister, Becca, in the center of a powder keg situation at the infamous mobster’s home. With her life on the line, he does the only thing he can think of to save her – he pretends that she’s his fiancée, who knows nothing of his clandestine activities with the criminal enterprise, and stands as her stalwart protector.

Forced into marriage…

But Quinten never expects the mob boss to force them into marriage at gunpoint as a test of loyalty. Not to mention, the idea of her belonging to him isn’t unappealing, nor is he as averse to the prospect as he lets on. Becca, with her sweet curves and take no prisoners attitude, fascinates him, stirs him, and leaves him craving her submission. Yet his past is fraught with broken dreams and death, so he uses his friendship with her brother as a shield against his yearning to claim her as his own.

Resistance is futile…

However, circumstances soon compel Becca and Quinten to become the most unlikely allies in a deadly game of deception. Now they must depend on one another for survival. As they race to unlock the keys to breaking the case, will Quinten be able to maintain his hands-off policy with Becca? Or will he surrender to the earth-shattering passion and turn their marriage of convenience into the real deal?

Publisher’s Note: This steamy friends to lovers romance contains elements of power exchange. While it’s the third in the Crescent City Kings series, it can be enjoyed independently.

Read an excerpt:
Quinten beg someone? Yeah, right.
She imagined even the Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang moved out of Quinten’s way when he approached. In front of the entire crime entourage, he snarled, “What the fuck are you doing here, Becca?”
Rudnikov glanced between them, speculative interest and suspicion in his dead gaze. “You two know each other, Quinten?”
Quinten grabbed her hand and squeezed her fingers. Hard. Like he was trying to pass along a meaning that she still didn’t understand—mainly because her entire day had taken on a weird damn Twilight Zone bent, with danger and betrayal filtering in through every crack. Quinten, with her hand still gripped in his much larger one, turned to Rudnikov and said, “Yes, we do know each other. She’s my fiancée, sir. She doesn’t know that I work for you.”
At the pressure on her hand, and Quinten’s declaration, Becca stared at Quinten like he had gone mad. Fiancée? What the hell? What was the man playing at?
“Is that a fact? I don’t see a ring on her hand,” Rudnikov replied, his face an inscrutable mask.
That was it. They were dead. Her story would end, here, now, holding Quinten’s hand. On the bright side, Becca thought, she wouldn’t die alone. Tension oozed in the room. She’d frozen and even forgot to breathe. The guards had their hands in position against their firearms. Becca prayed she wouldn’t pass out or pee in her pants in terror.
“That’s because she’s miffed with me. We had a fight the other night and she took it off. But she loves me.” Quinten stared down at her from his six foot plus height, his cognac gaze imparting a play along message while he pretended to be a man besotted.
Becca didn’t understand—any of it. Not why Sasha had betrayed her trust, or whether Quinten was a dirty cop and only coming to her rescue because he was friends with her brother, or whether the mob boss intended to let her walk out of his house alive.
“Is this true, Miss O’Malley?” Rudnikov asked like he was daring her to dispute Quinten’s outlandish claim.
Pain shot up her arm from her hand as Quinten squeezed. Becca tried to keep her expression serene. Doubt shrouded Rudnikov’s hard glare. Better to have the crime boss believe she was with Quinten than alone and at his mercy. With a silent prayer, she tossed her lot in with the devil she knew. “It’s true, Mister Rudnikov. I’m engaged to the big lug—for now, at least.”
“And why just for now?” Rudnikov’s stare made her want to squirm. But she held it together—barely. Staring Rudnikov in his eyes the color of mahogany, Becca knew what it was like to stare evil in the face. The man would have no qualms about ending her life, right here, right now. The bastard wouldn’t even flinch at the blood spilled in his ornate sitting room.
“Because the blasted man keeps dragging his heels. Any time I try to set a date, he gives me the runaround. He’s the one who proposed and made me all insane with wanting the whole fairytale wedding deal. It’s almost like he doesn’t want to marry me, and I took the ring off until he’s willing to set a date. And why didn’t you tell me about all this, sweetie?” She glanced at Quinten and found approval there.
Rudnikov chuckled and said in a deprecating manner, “Because business is the providence of men, Miss O’Malley… and to show that there are no hard feelings, I will help you young lovebirds out. I can’t have one of my men breaking a vow with my newest business associate, now can I? You’ll marry. Tonight, in fact. Robbie, call Father Vincent. Ask him to be here within the hour to perform a marriage ceremony.”
“But, but… I don’t think—” Becca sputtered. Marry Quinten? Was Rudnikov serious?
Quinten’s hold on her hand tightened even more. She wondered if she would have any bones left before the night was over, or if they would crack into jagged pieces. Quinten protested, “Sir, that’s a generous offer. But she wants a big church wedding and I don’t—”
Rudnikov waved him off. “Nonsense. It will happen tonight. You can always do the fancy wedding later.”
Becca opened her mouth to refuse but shut it again at Rudnikov’s piercing glare. In the game of chicken, he had called their bluff and was waiting to strike. Becca moved closer to Quinten, choosing her side.

It's Not About the Bike by Michelle Davis – August 2019

Similar to Jenna, the main character in Learning to Bend, I’m challenged on a bike. It stems from my childhood. Let’s just say that I wasn’t exactly the adventurous type – I was happy playing with Barbies, reading comic books, and doing art projects. Still, I vividly recall my first bike – a Schwinn Stingray complete with a banana seat and a yellow and orange frame. I remember riding up and down our sidewalk– with training wheels on and our dog’s leash attached to the handlebars. Early on I figured out an “easier” way to ride. I think that I might have been the last kid in our neighborhood to lose the training wheels.

As I grew older my friends and I really never rode our bikes. Biking was more of a vacation activity – riding flat roads on a rented blue bike with a white basket hanging from the handlebars. To stop these bikes, you just peddled backwards. The seats were soft, and they had kickstands. Easy, plain, and simple.

But then I married a man who loved to mountain bike. One Christmas he gave me a “very nice” mountain bike. This was a piece of art that should have been displayed inside, not stored in our garage. It was beautiful, but it intimidated the hell out of me. Still, I tried.

Let’s just say it wasn’t a high point in our marriage. I think I called him words that one should never say to her husband. And then, as I disembarked at a red light, I managed to take off about six inches of the skin on my right shin as my leg scraped the metal pedal.

Yet I wrote it off to my first time out, so I tried it again. But that “easy” bike ride was anything but. Once again, I employed my less than classy vocabulary to ensure that my husband knew exactly how I felt about that experience. After that the bike never left the garage… until we sold it at a huge loss.

This experience pretty much confirmed my suspicion about mountain biking. That was “his” thing, not mine. But life has a way of twisting and turning. Two and a half years ago we found ourselves spending significant time in Bend, Oregon – a mountain biking mecca. When a friend offered to take me riding on the trails, I readily agreed. I was sort of athletic, and if I were going to be in Bend, then I needed to mountain bike, right?

Maybe not – I again managed to take another six inches of skin off my right shin. Yep, that damn metal spiked pedal was the culprit. Plus, I fell into a very prickly bush, which didn’t help matters. I felt that this was an omen warning me to stay off of mountain bikes. So, I took heed. Sure, I’d take my hybrid bike out on the road, but its thin wheels couldn’t handle dirt. I resigned myself to the fact that I would never ride these magnificent trails.

But then this past winter I started to spin a lot. It was an amazing workout, and here was the best part – I couldn’t fall off. I had finally found my kind of bike!

However, this summer when we returned to Bend, I missed spinning. Plus, I witnessed how happy my husband would be after returning from the trails. It made me wonder – since I love spinning and being outside, what would happen if I gave mountain biking one more try? I took a risk and bought a mountain bike.

The second day out on the “baby” trails, I realized that my issue is not with the bike, it’s the feelings I experience while biking. When I’m riding on the trails all sorts of emotions emerge that make me uncomfortable:

- Will I fall and hurt myself?
- Will I look ridiculous?
- How can I navigate through the rocks?
- What if the ground is too sandy and gives out?
- What if I come across a dangerous animal?
- What if I make a wrong turn?
- What if I get left behind?
- Will I hit the tree trunk when riding between two trees?
- Will I break too hard and topple over my handlebars?

And the list goes on.

Being on a bike illuminated hidden fears, forcing me to second guess myself and doubt my abilities. It’s like trying on a bathing suit in a brightly lit dressing room – there is no hiding anything. All that you wish wasn’t there is in plain view. That is what riding a bike does to me.

But I want to become proficient on this mountain bike and maneuver the easy trails so I can ride with my husband and friends. So, I have a decision to make. I either strap on my helmet and climb onto this bike, or I play it safe and avoid those uncomfortable feelings.

It’s a similar dilemma I faced regarding self-publishing my book, Learning to Bend. Keeping it as a word document on my laptop would be safe. No one can judge my writing, criticize the characters, or laugh at the plot. But if I want to grow, expand, and see what I can truly become, I must put the manuscript out there, just as I know I must get on the bike if I want to have the joy of riding.

And who knows what will happen as I leave my comfort zone and try. Sure, I may fall down or my book may not sell. But that’s not what it’s all about. For if I never try and fail to venture into uncharted waters, then how will I ever know what I am capable of?

Jenna Moore's flawlessly orchestrated life and engagement to Ben Kelly, “the perfect man,” vanish when she discovers a controlling side of her fiancé. Confused and unsure of who she is without Ben, Jenna decides to uproot from her safe, predictable life in Boston and move to Bend, Oregon, hoping to find her answers there. It’s when she meets Jackson, a former Navy SEAL who battles demons of his own, that Jenna finds the courage to let go of being perfect and embrace uncomfortable risks, transforming her life through forgiveness, compassion, surrender and acceptance. Yet the rewards from discovering her true self exceed Jenna’s expectations – not only does she find the greatest love of her life, but she also understands what’s kept her from learning to bend.

Read an excerpt:
I’m drawn to a solitary man with shoulder length thick brown hair sitting alone at a café table. I try not to stare, but I can’t help myself. When I get closer, I see a faint scar on his cheek. It intrigues me. He intrigues me. Yet it’s his captivating green eyes that truly catch my attention. I look in the opposite direction and make it appear as if I’m about to walk away. But I can’t, he pulls me toward him. I pause, actually freeze in my tracks before I find my body shifting in his direction. He’s drinking coffee and gazing at me. Who is he and why am I feeling this way? Doing my best to regain some composure, I try to avert my eyes, but they won’t stop staring at him. What is it? He’s not traditionally handsome – he’s more of a sensual “bad boy” type – nothing like Ben. Suddenly, I feel my throat tighten and butterflies appear inside my stomach. I become conscious about my hair. I’ve had a helmet on all day. It must look awful.

Stop it. He’s just some stranger.

Although he’s sitting, I quickly assess his height and notice his chiseled muscular build. I’m guessing that he’s older than me, by at least five or more years. Something deep inside of me begins to stir as I pass by his table. That’s when I hear, “Place the weight on your inside toe when you turn. You’re using your knees too much.”
