House of Ruin by Miriam Newman with Sneak Peek!

It's a doubly special day today! Not only do you get to take a look into House of Ruin, the latest book in the Scion science fiction romance series by Miriam Newman, but she is also giving us a sneak peek into her upcoming titles! Please enjoy and let her know what you think! Follow the tour for more. And of course, best of luck entering the giveaway!

********************************

As my readers know, I write romance across many subject areas. I really don’t have a favorite. Historical, fantasy and science fiction are where I mainly concentrate—according to where the muse takes me. Currently it wanted me to complete my science fiction romance series, Scion, which I have done. Book II: House of Ruin is being featured right now. Book I: House of Bardin is still available, and Book III: House of the 12th Planet, soon will be.

Later this year DCL Publications will be presenting an ancient times romance called “Warlord.” Don’t miss the cover on that one! If ancient times are not your thing—although I love them--you can try the Siege of Jerusalem in the historical romance, “Land of Shadow.”

And finally, right now I am working on both a prequel and a sequel to my book The Comet, historical romance set around the time of the Norman conquest. There were so many good secondary characters in that one, I couldn’t resist. If you like knights, look for those.

When the beleaguered citizens of the capitol city of Thelona are swept by plague in the absence of their ruling class, which has fled it en masse, desperation finally pushes them to take to the streets. With their city burning, the Lords of Thelona have no choice but to shoulder the burden of responsibility. In the absence of their Highest, they turn to Caius, Scion of the House of Bardin. He has unwittingly placed himself in the path of his ruler’s ambitions and also endangered his human slave, Lela.

Read an excerpt:
Lela hoped for a peaceful day next day, since many of their guests had departed, but at mid-morning she heard Gracchu’s mutter from the front doorway. “Well, here comes trouble.”

The women were once more scrubbing down the sooty entryway that seemed like it would never be clean. One by one, though, they stood to crane their necks and peer out the door. It was so unusual for Gracchu to comment upon any visitor that she and the others feared some catastrophe, but the tears Lela felt start in her eyes were those of mirth and she looked at Dinitra helplessly. The dignified housekeeper was red in the face and took a moment to collect herself.

“Oh, go on then,” Dinitra said, giving their mountainous house guard an ineffectual shove. “Go help her!”

Shooting her an evil look, Gracchu stomped ungraciously down the circular drive and through Caius’s iron gate towards which an apparition struggled

Vena had not lost a single pound since Lela had seen her before Solstice. If anything, the dressmaker had increased in girth, and the sight of her unequal battle with gravity as she hauled herself up Camini Hill threw the watching women into gales of laughter. If they had not known her vanity, they would have had more sympathy.

But Vena, who had just survived conflagration, was gowned in a vast expanse of priceless silver brocade. The jewels encasing rolls of fat at her neck should have guaranteed her death; how she had made it through the citizenry alive was a question no one would ever be able to answer. Her towering mountain of jet-dyed hair was seriously askew, but it too was threaded with real silver. Teetering on heeled footwear, she could not have outrun anyone. Lela suspected sheer bravado and the stunned disbelief of onlookers had preserved her dressmaker’s life. Probably by the time footpads had stopped speculating on whether her jewels could possibly be real Vena had tottered past them and down some bolt hole known only to her.

“Bring wine,” Dinitra instructed one of the young slave girls. “Plenty.”

Fantasy poetry driven by myths and legends has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I was published in poetry before catching the romance writing bug. I bring that background to my writing along with a lifelong addiction to horses, an 18-year career in various areas of psychiatric social services and many trips to Ireland, where I nurture my muse. My published works range from contemporary fantasy romance to fantasy historical, futuristic, science fiction and historical romance. Currently I live in rural Pennsylvania with a “motley crew” of rescue animals. You can see my books at www.miriamnewman.com.

Live Soldier by Liam Clay

Welcome! This book is for my fans of science fiction. Check out an excerpt and then follow the tour to see even more. Be sure to let the author know what you think in the comments section, or feel free to ask him any questions you may have.

Live Soldier

THE APOCALYPSE WILL BE TELEVISED.

You know what they call me.

Camera-eyed killer. Spawn of the ruins. Man who stole a city.

These are not the names of a saint. But every legend has an origin story. And because of what I am, you can experience mine in real-time.

Fair warning, though: my life contains instances of drug use, bio-terrorism, aquatic street fighting, unsolicited retinal surgery, advanced warfare, amateur sex and straight-up murder.

But if you're sick of sanitized heroes... then log in, lose yourself and become the Live Soldier. Because you've never met a marine like me.

Read an excerpt:
The balcony is moving, I realize dimly. No - the entire labyrinth is shifting, rearranging itself into a single great platform. A low dais now occupies its center, a ring of security guards creating a perimeter around it. But these alterations have nothing to do with the drug; robotics and stagecraft are at work here.

Then the world’s color inverts: white turning to black, blue become red etc. I’ve barely adjusted when direction follows suit, and now everything is upside down. Oh crap, this will be the Anex, how much did she -

A (to me) golden clad figure floats up (and therefore down) from nowhere, until her bare feet make contact with the dais. Fantastically tall and smooth cheeked with flint-grey eyes, purple hair pulled back from a sharp widow’s peak. Letiva made young again.

“Welcome,” she says, “to the newly completed set of my upcoming feature!”

The crowd is enthralled, but the Ladder is positively smitten. He takes a step in her direction, but his legs aren’t cooperating and - more distressingly - he has begun to emit a high pitched mechanical whine. I think it’s a hallucination at first, but the crowd can hear it too. Everywhere I look people are clapping hands over their ears, backing away from the Ladder as he careens straight for Letiva. Her security detail closes in -

- and I’m blown off my feet. Everything goes black, shifting abruptly to blue, a deep bass roar accompanying. Now I’m falling, spinning like a top, until an impact hits me with a façade of deep, gutsy red. This holds for some time, fading gradually into pearly white unconsciousness.

The Cage by Gloria Sanford

The Cage

“I hate Oliver.” Jacob frowns as he stares across the arena. Oliver Kent is surrounded by his friends from the Soerin team, laughing and having a great time and Jacob wants to punch him in the face.

Samuel taps two fingers against Jacob’s chest confidently, right over his heart, right over the feelings he’s reading. Thinks he’s reading. “No. No, you really don’t.”

Not long after Jacob is telling Samuel and Oliver...

“I had a vision,” Jacob tells them. “Of the future. Far in the future. Not, like, the next three minutes. But the future.”

Oliver audibly swallows. He leans in close too. “Of what, Jacob?”

“Us.” Jacob’s tired, unable to keep his eyes open, but he smiles. “The three of us, you, me and Samuel. It was our future. Together. We’re gonna be together for a long time.”

Now they just have to survive the cage and make it to the future…

Hathor Legacy: Revelations by Deborah A. Bailey

Hathor Legacy: Revelations – Book Three of the Hathor Legacy Series

An enemy returns to spark new tensions between the Guardians and Novacorp. In the midst of the crisis, Nadira is given information about her parents that threatens to destroy her relationship to the Guardians and to Jonathan.

While Nadira searches for answers, Jonathan is enticed into the hedonistic world of the Novacorp executive class. His entertainment club attracts the elite of Hathor, but his notoriety comes with a price.

The worlds of the Guardians and Novacorp are put on a collision course where only one side may come out on top. Nadira is called on to make the ultimate sacrifice to save the legacy of the First Families, the original settlers of Hathor, while Guardians, Kasema and Deshtu PSI groups are faced with the choice to unite or be brought completely under Novacorp control.

Old scores are settled and long-hidden truths are revealed, and at the end Nadira and Jonathan’s relationship and their world will never be the same.

Read an excerpt:
Outside, she ran down the marble stairs towards a waiting transport. The heavy metal door slid back, but before she could enter, she felt a tug on her upper arm.

"Why are you in such a hurry?" Jon asked.

"Good evening, Sentry Leader Nadira. What is your desired location?" the computerized voice inquired.

"Take me home," she replied, as she settled back into her seat. Their apartment was in a tower only about 15 minutes from this one. But by the looks of the clogged traffic lanes, the trip would probably take longer. This main boulevard went through the Entertainments District, one of the busiest areas of the city.

"Tell me what happened. Why do you think they killed your parents?" Jon asked.

The transport pulled out into the traffic lanes and slowly rumbled down the boulevard. Nadira looked out over the crowd, just in case she saw Zina among them. She knew it was a waste of time though, if anything, Zina would be in her private transport.

"I went to see Mikal at the detention center. He told me everything. My father got to the penal colony. He wasn't lost out there. They had him killed."

Jon opened his mouth to reply, then sagged against the cushions. "You went to see Mikal? And you believe him? Are you serious?"
"Why would he lie?"

"Is that a real question?" Jon brought his fist down on the seat. "He's trying to set you up. Don’t you see? He's a liar and a killer."

"He found my father's ship, Jon. That wasn't a lie." She couldn’t understand why he wouldn't listen. He had his mind made up and it was pissing her off.

"I know what he did at the medi-evac, Nadira. I know he tried to force a psychic connection on you. Maji told me." He grasped her hand. "Mikal is not getting another chance to hurt you."

Welcome back Deborah A. Bailey, author of 'Hathor Legacy: Burn'

Welcome back to Books to Light Your Fire! We last saw you in January. In addition to working on this sequel to 'Hathor Legacy: Outcast,' What have you been up to?
I'm glad to be back! Time has gone by so quickly, hasn't it? A few months ago I published Secrets of a Great Resume. And I started work on an audio version of my short story collection, Electric Dreams: Seven Futuristic Tales.

Currently I'm working on a pair of paranormal romance novellas featuring an entrepreneurial lion shifter and his non-shifter mate. I'm finishing up book 2 and if I stay focused (sometimes that can be a challenge) I'll get them out before the end of the year. Maybe I'll get to visit again after they're published! :)
Is there going to be a Book 3?
Yes, I originally planned for a trilogy. I have a few ideas for what will happen in book 3, but I haven't created an outline yet. The way I left the story at the end of book 2, there will be a lot of changes coming up for the Guardian organization.

Nadira and Jonathan's relationship will continue to grow stronger, in part due to their psychic bond. So, they will be a very solid team going forward. But though I love a happily ever after, you know there will be challenges along the way.

I've also introduced a few secondary characters who may get stories of their own. An author friend of mine suggested that I write a few shorter novellas in between books 2 and 3, so I might do that featuring the secondary characters.
What are the challenges in writing a sequel?
Well, for me the challenge was in creating a new story while referring to events from the first book. You have to bring new readers up to speed.

When I wrote book 1, I did the worldbuilding as I went along. I tried to explain as much as I could about Hathor, but some readers felt that they didn't have a good enough sense of the backstory.

I think as authors, we know our world and our characters, but we don't always get that onto the page. In book 2, I filled in as much of the backstory as possible, without doing a lot of info dumps (and slowing down the story).

However, there are always going to be situations where I want the reader to come to their own conclusions. For instance, in book 2 I introduced Mikal, another Guardian who knew Nadira from childhood. There are things about him that might seem obvious to the reader, but Nadira can only see things based on the information she has. While the reader sees her POV and Jonathan's. As a reader, you have more information--and you might come to a different conclusion than she does.
What are some of the pleasures in writing a sequel?
If you've already created a world and the characters, writing a sequel is like reconnecting with old friends. When you start a new story, you have to build up interest in the characters and in their world. While at the same time you're introducing them to the reader. With a sequel, there's information that's already been established, so you can keep moving forward.
How did your feelings change toward the characters and their situations as you continued their story?
That's a very interesting question! Last week I finally read book 2 as a reader (and not as an editor or writer). Then I read book 1 again. I could see the progression and character growth between the two books.

In book 1, Jon and Nadira have a lot of conflict. I wanted Jon to have alpha traits, so he had to be a bit prickly. He was used to doing things his own way, and being a CEO's son, he had means and a position in society. Nadira had a position too, and powers that set her apart from average people.

In addition, she went through the trauma of being separated from her parents. Jon was raised in a loving, supportive family. Right away there was conflict because their world views were different.

By book 2 Jon and Nadira have learned to work together, and their connection adds another dimension to their relationship. Jonathan is less arrogant, mostly because he's grown a lot during the time he's been with Nadira on Hathor. Something else that helped to change his personality was that in book 1, he found out some family secrets. That knowledge gave him more compassion and understanding.

In the first book, Nadira was more independent and didn't have a lot of trust. Not to say she's not independent in this book, but she's learned to open up more and let people in. Her relationship with Jon has taught her that she doesn't have to do it all alone. And she's found that being vulnerable doesn't mean you're weak and helpless. So she has a better understanding of herself.
What do you think you have learned about your craft in between these two novels?
Great question! As far as I'm concerned, if you want to be a better writer, you have to write. That's what helps you to develop your craft. For years I wrote short stories, and had a certain comfort level with short pieces. It was very intimidating to dive into a longer work.

I'm grateful that I had help from a writing mentor for both books. It's good to have someone who's on the outside who will ask questions. I was too close to the work to think about the points she brought up.

When I worked on the first book, I was focused on trying to be perfect and pick just the right word. I think I spent too much time on the technical things, instead of letting myself enjoy the process.

In book 2, I went with my feelings and just wrote the story as it came to me. I had an outline, but there were many times when I deviated from it if I found a better route to take. I was much less concerned with perfection, and more with staying in a creative flow.

I think a reader who picks up both books will be able to see the difference. Not that one is better than the other, but the feeling is different. Sorry, I don't have a better way to explain it!
-You have previously won awards for your short stories. Congratulations! Can you tell us about those experiences?
Thank you! I submitted two of my stories to contests at the Philadelphia Writers' Conference, and I was very pleased that both stories won awards. In addition, I entered a story in a competition held by US1, which is a magazine based in Princeton, NJ.

I didn't even know my story had been chosen until I received the award check!

When you're acknowledged in that way, it's a good feeling because I got validation that my work was good enough to be selected. But at the same time, it's easy to get caught in a trap of always looking to be validated outside of ourselves.

If we don't get a certain number of reviews, if there aren't enough 5-star reviews, or if this one or that one doesn't acknowledge us, we feel bad. At the end of the day, we have to believe in ourselves and work. Just tell the best story you can, and when it's done, start the next one.
You told us before that the best writing advice you ever received was to write every day. It can be a struggle to figure out how to carve out the time. How did you make it a habit? How has it improved your writing?
What I've found is that once I get into the regular habit of writing, I don't want to stop. I want to do it all the time. I'll bet most authors feel that way. It's something you have to do, because it's like oxygen. But sure, it can be a struggle to find the time.

Right now I'm on a contracting assignment as a technical writer, and this project requires me to be in an office everyday. After working from home for the past couple of years, it's a big change. It’s a challenge to manage my personal work, and commuting takes about 60-90 minutes out of my schedule.

It's easy to end up dropping the things that don't seem as important. But in this case, my fiction writing is important to me. It's not just a nice little hobby, it's part of my business and I have to take it seriously.

Having a regular writing habit is like having a regular exercise routine. It's not something you can do once in a while and expect to see results. I think writing regularly will help you to improve in the same way that regular exercise will help improve your endurance and your strength.
What is one of your greatest achievements?
Well, since we're talking about writing, I'm going to say that one of my greatest achievements is to have written and published my 2 novels in a year and a half. It was a dream of mine to write a novel, and it's exciting to see it come true.
What is still on your "Bucket List"?
Let's see, I'd like to learn how to play piano. I've taken lessons in the past, but if you don't stick with it, you lose it. I'd also like to travel and visit different countries. Friends of mine have visited the UK on a few occasions, and after seeing their pictures, I'd love to visit those places myself. My list seems to get longer and longer!
What message would you like to send out to readers?
I'd just like to thank them for picking up my books. There are so many books being published and readers have an endless amount of choices. I really hope they enjoy my stories as much as I enjoyed writing them. And I'll add that even if you've never tried a SF Romance before, give it a try. There are so many terrific writers in the genre, and many different types of stories.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I want to thank you for hosting me, and thank you for doing your part to help authors get their books out there.
You are welcome! Thank you so much for your time!

Hathor Legacy: Burn
by Deborah A. Bailey

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
On the planet, Hathor, an old threat re-emerges that may destroy the fragile alliance between the Guardians and Novacorp. When Nadira is called to investigate a rash of fires throughout the city, she discovers the Deshtu, another group with PSI powers who have been purposely kept in the shadows.
Working to uncover the source of the fires, Nadira learns the brutal truth about the origin of the Guardians. The Guardian Elders have plans to make Nadira more powerful, and she may be forced to sever her psychic connection to her lover, Jonathan Keel.
When an unexpected ally gives Jonathan information about the Deshtu that connects them to the fires, he becomes a convenient scapegoat for the opposing factions. Nadira puts her life on the line to solve the crime, while the Elders make their move to remove Jonathan from her life forever.
As time runs out, the Guardians prepare for a clash with Novacorp that could plunge the planet into chaos, and a final betrayal forces Nadira to risk everything to save herself and Hathor.
Read an excerpt:
Up ahead at the corner, she saw lights and transport vehicles passing back and forth. They could get one and head back to the apartment. She was in no mood to return to the reception. Not after what she'd just seen and felt.
"What the hell could be the reason to set these fires?" Jon asked, picking up the pace as they neared the corner.
"The officers think the Guardians are doing this. They believe Varyn's story."
At the corner, they hurried to the transport stand and got into the first one of a long line of shiny, blue and black vehicles. Once the doors closed behind them, she pressed her palm against the clear ID plate. "Take us home."
"Affirmative, Sentry Nadira." After retrieving her data from the system, the transport pulled into the traffic lanes, heading towards the apartment building.
"When are you going to talk to Varyn again?" Jonathan asked, as he glanced behind him.
"As soon as I can. I wanted to give her a little time. But I don't think I can wait much longer," she replied. "Is something wrong?"
"Huh? No. I just felt like we were being watched." He settled down in the seat and slid his arm around her. "It's nothing."
She remembered having that same feeling when she'd come home from the Gathering.
As a Guardian she'd tracked people before. She'd used her abilities to sense their locations and read their thoughts. Was that happening now? Were she and Jon being tracked by the people who'd set the fire?
'Mercenary Instinct' by Ruby Lionsdrake
Blurb:
Skulking around in the ruins on a planet swarming with treasure hunters, slavers, and bounty hunters isn’t good for one’s health. But Ankari Markovich needs a few archaeological samples for her latest business venture, a venture that might prove lucrative enough to move her family off the impoverished planet where she grew up. Unfortunately, she has no sooner collected her samples than she’s captured by a band of brawny mercenaries. The captain might be handsome, but he’s intent on turning her over to some finance lord who has, for reasons unknown, put a bounty on her head, a ridiculously large one at that. If she can’t figure out a way to escape before she’s delivered to the lord’s home world, she could be forced into a life of indentured servitude—or worse.
Captain Viktor Mandrake doesn’t usually take on piddling bounty hunting gigs, but when his intelligence officer informs him of a criminal on a nearby planet, he decides it wouldn’t hurt to take a shuttle down to collect the woman. But Ankari Markovich is trouble from the start, nearly eluding his elite forces, then fighting and tricking his people left and right. He finds himself admiring her spirit, but according to her warrant, she’s a criminal. The safest thing is to keep her in the brig and ignore her until she can be handed off to the man who wants her.
But the situation grows more complicated when other bounty hunters show up, wanting to claim Ankari for themselves. Thanks to this woman, Viktor’s ship is in danger, his crew members are going missing, and he’s fighting enemies he never asked for in a jungle in the middle of a hurricane. He’s either going to strangle Ankari… or fall in love. Either scenario could get him killed.
Mercenary Instinct is a full-length, stand-alone novel of 90,000 words. It is part of the “Mandrake Company” series of science fiction romance stories and is recommended for readers who enjoy space-based adventure (such as Firefly) and steamy love stories (in the style of Linnea Sinclair).
He stepped into the hallway and down the ladder to a sealed hatchway. The door to the cargo bay slid open and Destiny’s heart jumped at the sight of the cages and crates that nearly filled the space. The hold had to be about fifteen meters tall and thirty wide, but it was hard to tell from the video. She put the length at about fifty meters with a whitish light at the far end—probably the passage to the bridge and slave master’s quarters. The walls of the cargo hold had the typical honeycomb structure—several levels offset from each other for cells that housed slaves.
The Kirsovals’ genetically modified intelligence averaged the same as normal humans, but had a wider spread. Some could be very, very, smart and others dumb as a toad. Rumor was, they ate infants with below average intelligence. Destiny shivered. Nobody knew what went on in a Kirsoval hive. No one had ever gotten out of one alive. Richards was one of only thirty-seven registered humans with Kirsoval DNA. The doctors had traced his ancestry in a direct line to a distant great-grandmother. That made him one of the six of that thirty-seven who got their Kirsoval blood from a direct descendant. The others inherited Kurse DNA from one hundred percent human ancestors who had been genetically altered.
The center alleyway of the hold was open and littered with individual cages and ploy-plastic shipping crates common to the Kirsoval. Excitement tingled deep in her belly and she straightened in her seat. What valuable technology and trade goods might be inside those crates?
“There’s still gravity,” Richards said. “How can that be without some kind of electromagnetic emission?”
“Kirsoval technology, maybe, or something well shielded.”
“Damn, Angel. Who’s to say there’s not a lot more going on behind that shielding?”
“Do you see anyone?”
“No. Nothing on the heat sensors either. I’m taking my helmet off.” The picture jerked, panned, and tilted at the deck. “Hello? Anyone here?”
Destiny held her breath. The only sound that came over his link was a clicking noise like a relay that kept rhythm with the flickering lights.
“Did you hear that?” Richards asked.
“Hear what?”
“A whisper.”
“One sec.” She rewound the recording that replayed the sound. “Nothing here.”
“I heard a whisper that sounded like ‘There you are.’”
Her pulse skipped a beat before she remembered that Richards was a superstitious man. It was strange in a man as big and tough as him, but he believed in ghosts, the afterlife, and generally things that went bump in the night. She teased him mercilessly about it, but he never budged an inch in his beliefs.
“You’re just being—”
His video feed flickered and cut out.
“What the—Richards?”
No reply.
Her heart went into hyper-drive. “Dammit. Get back here. It’s a trap.” Destiny poised her hand over the cutting lasers. Could she cut a hole and grab him in the tractors as he and the air blew out of the hole? “Richards!”
“What?” came his voice.
“What happened? I lost your video feed.”
The sound of him smacking his helmet came over the audio. “Duh-know. I’m fine.”
Destiny blew out a breath. “Time to come back, Mister.” Sending him in—stopping to investigate—had been one colossal mistake. Near silence stretched over the audio link, clicking, clicking, clicking. “Richards? Do me a favor and put your helmet back on.”
She shouldn’t have allowed him to take off his helmet. She’d have to cut, grab, tractor, and get him onto the Pale Dawn fast. If she opened the outer lock door and left the air valves open, he’d get oxygen quicker. He still risked a blown eardrum, or two. Maybe an aneurism.
“Richards!” She drew a mental circle on the Kirsoval ship where he was likely to be without her hitting him with the beam. “Richards. Answer me.”
“Looks like—what the—”
“What is it?”
The sound of him drawing his weapon came over the link. “There’s someone here.”
She scanned the sensor displays. Nothing showed except him. No radio wave activity. Thermal looked stable, cold as hell. No subspace or warp bubble activity. “Sensors show no life signs other than yours aboard. Put on your helmet, you fool.” She scooted closer to the cutting lasers. Damn him for taking off his helmet.
“I don’t know what, but something is here. Can’t see him, but I can feel him.”
“Him?” she echoed.
“Just saying, not thinking.”
What the hell did that mean? He was losing it. Despite his superstitions, she had never known him to show fear or dread. That was part of the Kurse. Especially when he was outnumbered, like he’d been by those pirates, he was cool and collected, almost detached like a machine, and that freaked the hell out of everyone else, including her.
So what now? Destiny looked at the sensors. There was nothing unusual about the ship except for the fact it was intact, a slave ship, still had gravity, life support, no signs of damage or foul play, and what else? What the hell else did she need? That was way too many coincidences. The long-range sensors showed quiet space all around. The sooner they cut the thing up and got out, the better.
A sharp intake of breath came over the audio.
“What happened?” Destiny set the laser on low and centered the beam on the Yeoman’s hull. At low power, the laser wasn’t cutting, but was drawing a wide circle where she wanted to cut. She kept the tractor beam poised and on automatic in readiness to grab him as he was expelled along with the air inside the ship.
“The lights went out,” he said.
Her heart pounded. “I heard a gasp. I thought… I don’t know what I thought. So you’re getting back here, right?”
“There is only one light on now. I think whoever’s here wants me to go to the bridge.”
“There’s no one aboard, dammit. The lasers are warmed up. We’ll cut this tub from the safety of our ship. Get back here. Now.”
“Yeah,” he replied, but she didn’t feel any better.
Get to know Chandra Ryan, author of 'Ulterior Motives'
Meet author Chandra Ryan. Get to know her and her latest book 'Ulterior Motives.'
What was the inspiration behind 'Ulterior Motives'?
I was reading a lot of mail order bride stories at the time and they were just so much fun to read, I wanted to try my hand at one. I thought one set in the future on a settler planet would be an interesting twist but every time I tried to write it I just couldn’t. Something wasn’t right. As I thought about it being futuristic, the idea of having a mail order groom just started to make more and more sense. It wasn’t until I gave Jasper an ulterior motive for answering the ad, though, that the story really started to take shape.
Which character was the most fun to write?
The doctor. He’s just a secondary character but he came to life as I wrote him. He’s funny but down to earth in a way any doctor on a settler planet would have to be. Plus, he’s got more vices than any doctor of his age really should and that’s always fun.
Which scene is your favorite?
That’s a hard one for me. Kind of like asking which kid is my favorite. Hmmm…I’d have to say the scene Jasper is talking to the doctor about Kat’s recovery, though. Those men are too funny when you put them together.
What kind of research did you need to do for this book?
The best kind of research! I watched Firefly and I binged on western books and, of course, more mail order bride books. I loved researching for this book so much, that I might just do it all over again in the near future.
Will we ever see these characters again?
You definitely see Jasper. He makes an appearance in the second book of this series, Shared Objectives. And, if I were a betting woman, I’d bet that isn’t the last time we see him either. He might just become a very important person in the future of this universe by the time it’s all said and done.
What makes science fiction a good fit for erotica?
There really are no boundaries or set rules in science fiction. If you can dream it up, you can make it happen. I think that works really well for erotica since the same can be said for that genre as well. They compliment each other really well that way.
What is the appeal of writing in this genre?
My own imagination is the only thing that limits me. I can take a story wherever I feel it needs to go and push the characters in ways that aren’t possible in other genres. If I can imagine it, I can make a way for it to become true on paper.
How does your background in psychology influence your writing?
I’d like to think it helps me write more believable and deeper characters. The reason I studied psychology was that people fascinated me. You take one hundred people, put them in exactly the same situation and they’ll come up with one hundred different ways to respond. And each of them would probably swear there was no other way to deal with that particular situation. What is truly interesting is, they’re probably right. Each person could come up with a different response because that was the only one that would work for them.
Please tell us about your other published books.
I have two fantasy romance stories out with Samhain Publishing, Dragonborne and Ravenborne. Dragonborne is about a dragon shifter who is shot down while in flight and the human healer who rescues him. When she finds out there are malevolent forces killing the children in her village, it’s his turn to come to the rescue.
Ravenborne takes place in the same world hundreds of years later. In it, a young royal woman who was cast out of society when her family’s home is raided and her family is slaughtered, is called to serve the king as his spy. She has developed the gift of telepathy and the king would rather see it used to help him rather than over throw him. When she falls for the knight the king sent to accompany her and learns who set up the raid on her family home, she has to make some hard decisions.
Then I have two urban fantasies with Ellora’s Cave, Ink in the Blood and Bond Betrayed. They feature two sisters who have magic in their blood but were abandoned by their people, the Community, because they feared the girls’ father. Being raised in human foster care, they’ve both struggled to find their place in the world.
Ink in the Blood is Izzy’s story. She’s a recovering addict who is after retribution for her years hooked on drugs. When she falls for the DEA agent assigned to her case, she knows she’s in trouble. He’s a human and has no idea she’s not. Bond Betrayed is Nikki’s story. She’s a seductress and the one thing Isaac can use as leverage to get his sister back. He’s playing with fire, though. If he’s not careful, they’ll both get burned.
On what other projects are you currently working?
I just finished edits on the second book in the Universal Defiance series, Shared Objectives. I believe it’s going to be out in September. It’s my first ménage so I’m super excited. In it, two genetically altered soldiers have to figure out how to deal with their mutual attraction to a geneticist. Either she’ll bring them closer together or drive a wedge between them.
If you could travel to another planet, like the one in your book, would you do so?
I think I’d go for a visit, but I don’t think I could live on one. I’m a creature of comfort. I like being able to run to the store on a whim. And I love being able to buy a cup of overpriced coffee anytime I like. I can say without a doubt that Kat is a much stronger woman than I will ever be.
What can you be found doing when not reading or writing?
When I’m not reading or writing I’m usually outside. I love hiking and swimming. And, with two little boys, it’s good to be outdoors burning energy. Otherwise, they might have driven me crazy a long time ago.
What is something readers may be surprised to learn about you?
My mom and sister are both very, very Christian. I was raised Christian and still am. But I’m married to a Vedantic and we’re raising our children in a dual-faith home. We both respect each other’s religion so it’s actually a lot easier than most people think. And I think that respect and love has really helped our children have a deeper spirituality.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I want to thank you for having me on your blog today. I really enjoyed the interview and being able to talk to all your guests about my story.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
Being from a rather nomadic family, Chandra Ryan loves to travel and meet people. But she’s found that sometimes, like when you’re stuck inside because of a good old-fashioned Southwestern heat wave, you have to make do. Fortunately for her and her loving family, who don’t like seeing her suffer from cabin fever, she’s found creating new people and places equally as fascinating. Also, you’re a lot less likely to spill your ice tea.
BLURB:
Universal Defiance, Book One
On a rural settler planet, Kat must resort to putting out an ad to find a husband. She doesn’t expect to find love—that’s a dream in these parts—just a partner to help work her ranch. Then the devastatingly handsome Jasper answers her ad and turns her on in ways she never dreamed possible. Too bad he’s not who he says he is.
Jasper doesn’t know what he’s getting into when he ventures undercover to investigate a legal claim against Kat’s ranch. But after a toe-curling night under her roof and in her bed, he’s willing to do anything to stay there. He can’t say no to the tough-as-nails businesswoman who makes his body come alive.
When people start getting hurt, though, both Kat and Jasper have to decide how valuable one piece of land is. And the ranch that brought them together might be the very thing standing between them.
Read an excerpt:
“Excuse me, sir.” Her calm words broke through the chaos of the port station and gained his undivided attention. This close to him, staring into his rich, brown eyes, her stomach began to churn with nerves. She quickly pushed through the sensation, though. She didn’t have the time for silliness. And it was the height of absurdity for her to be uncomfortable around her soon-to-be husband. “I’m Katarina Maxim. My friends call me Kat.”
She held her hand out to him in casual greeting as she tried not to fidget. She’d debated how to greet him as she’d driven to the station. A kiss seemed rather forward. But she did want him to feel welcomed. A handshake seemed like the best idea at the time. Now, as she waited for him to take her hand, she started second-guessing herself.
“Katarina, that’s a lovely name.”
She noted that he’d called her Katarina but tried not to let that color her first impression of him. She didn’t hate the name nor did she hate being called by it. It just didn’t fit her. Not anymore. Katarina sounded soft, delicate—refined, even. Like she’d been before her family had moved here. She could only hope that he didn’t see her as any of those things. If he did, he would be sorely disappointment when he got to know her better. “Kat. Only my mother called me by my full name,” she pressed.
“Kat it is.” His smile seemed genuine but his palm was as soft as new leather when he finally took hers. If he stayed, that would change. This planet demanded calluses and blisters. Her hands were proof of that.
