“You don’t have to help.” 

“I want to.” Jason stands next to me as I wash the plates and he dries them for me. “I know I kinda showed up here and interrupted your dinner. Sorry about that.” 

“Kinda showed up? More like you did show up,” I tease. 

“Potato, potahto. But, I can’t stop thinking about you. This isn’t a line I grabbed from some cheesy movie. I know, I know, I don’t even know you,” he chuckles when I raise an eyebrow. “But I’ve seen enough to know I want to. I want to help you discover what your dreams are and watch you offer your daughter the best life she can have.” 

“It’s complicated with her around. She already expects to see you everyday, and this is only the third time she’s seen you. I always thought if I ever met someone, and that was a big if, I’d get to know the man really well first, before introducing him to my daughter. This is backwards. It’s almost as if she’s gotten to know you before I have. It’s confusing for her.” 

“So let me get to know you.” He angles his body toward me. “Let me show you who I am. It’s easy with her because she came right up to me, offered me a cookie, and started talking as if I was her best friend. I guess kids are less guarded in that sense.” He casts his eyes down a moment. I place my hand over his. 

“They’ve got it easy, don’t they?” I ask him, trying to lighten the mood. 

“Yup.” Jason continues drying the plate he was working on. 

I’m not the only one with a past.

As he packed, Kevin noticed that Pat did have one picture stuck in the corner of her bedroom dresser. It was an old picture. Kevin had been in the room before and seen it there before. It was a black & white of the two of them together outside the house. They were just teenagers, tall and thin. Big smiles on their faces and arms around each other. The picture had to be ten years old. 

Kevin picked it up and studied it. Pat came over and stood next to him as he looked at it. Then she said, "I thought about taking it down today so you wouldn't know I had kept it up there all these years. I want to be more like you, more honest with my feelings. So I left it up there. Believe me; I have looked at that picture often. I prayed for you lots of nights before I went to bed, especially when you were in the service. I don't know what I would have done if something had happened to you."

Hannah was in the living room. The sun porch bedroom could be closed off from there only by a set of French Doors. She could see the two of them in there looking at the picture. She heard the conversation, and attempted to rescue her daughter from it. She called out to ease the situation and said that she was going to get her camera and retake that same picture of them, today.

**My thoughts**

This is the second book in the series that I have read, though it is the first one in the series. It is true that you can read the books out of order and/or as stand alone books and be absolutely fine. I pretty much already knew how this one was going to end, because I had read the second one, but it didn't matter. I loved reading the scorching history of Riley and Cooper. I also enjoyed seeing a different side of Tucker, Jeff, Harley, and some of the other characters who are also in the second one.

Country music may not be my thing, but there is definitely something about a man and his guitar. Cooper is definitely drool-worthy. Riley has a strong personality, and I could see us being friends. I am usually not a fan of instant-love stories, yet was completely sucked into this as I enjoyed it while sipping a glass of wine while sitting out in the sun. Quick smoking hot read for a sunny beach day.
