Nike wished she could move. She longed to shiver into his touch and lean into his kiss. She wished her heart could beat again and she could enfold him in her wings.

What he wore and his makeup didn’t matter to her. Men in women’s clothing could be pretty. He had the eyes and body to pull off the look. If being different made him happy, then wonderful. She wanted to make him happy, too. With the curse in place, all she could do was listen and watch.

Damn the magic. Damn her curse. She wanted to be free. Her brothers and sister were there, but they couldn’t hear her. Couldn’t they tell the human how to break the curse?

She stared at the human male. He reminded her of the servant men on Olympus. He was so pretty but masculine. He’d defer to her, wouldn’t he? He struck her as glamorous, yet off-limits like the servants. Not that she’d held back before. Her desire to sleep with the servants had gotten her into trouble so many times. “When you are trapped underwater for two centuries, you do not learn much. I was rescued before in the nineteenth century, if the man who removed me from the water was telling the truth. He placed me in his studio and talked to me much as you have done. I might have stayed out of the sea if his studio had not collapsed. He liked to paint the water and the sunsets. I assume he is not the man who loaned me, as he would be dead by now.” Kratos rubbed Andy’s biceps. He’d stepped so close, his warm breath skittered across Andy’s cheeks. “I would very much like you to teach me about the world right now.”

Andy bit back a whimper. The tips of his ears burned and his skin itched. The dirty thoughts from his cleaning sessions came back. He wanted to do more than teach Kratos about the twenty-first century. He wanted to suck the man’s cock.

“You are thinking.” Kratos trailed his index finger over Andy’s bottom lip. The electricity snapped between them. Every nerve ending in Andy’s body sizzled. Kratos caged him in his arms. “I like you, Andy.”

“You hardly know me.” Fuck, fuck, fuck. That was the silliest thing to blurt out. Well, kind of. He didn’t know Kratos well at all.

“You do not understand.” Kratos walked Andy backward until he bumped into something. A desk? Andy wasn’t sure. Kratos fixed his gaze on Andy’s. “You spoke to me. I might not have been able to answer you right away, but I heard all the things you said.”

“All the things?” Like including the sexual things? His brain buzzed.

“Yes,” Kratos replied. “I did not understand every word, but I knew what you meant. When was the last time you fornicated?”

Fornicated? Andy fumbled for where to put his hands. He smoothed his palms up Kratos’s muscled chest. “I-It’s been a while.”

“I need to talk to you about the work situation,” he says as he follows me out. “I got the contract, but I want to make sure you’re okay with this before I sign it.”

I slide the key into the doorknob and Houston places his hand over mine to stop me from turning the knob. “I can’t go in there with you. Please stay out here until we’re done talking.”

I shake his hand off and turn around to face him. “There’s nothing to talk about. You have to sign the contract. The way I feel about working with you shouldn’t matter.”

“But it does matter. I don’t want to upset you. You were there first.”

I can’t help but laugh. “So this is a territorial thing? You think because I was there first that I have some sort of right to keep you out?” His left eyebrow shoots up the way it always does when he’s confused and it nearly renders me mute. “Houston, if I didn’t work there you wouldn’t think twice about signing that contract. So that’s what you should do. Just… please stop making this into something it isn’t. We hardly know each other anymore, and that’s the way it’s going to remain.”

He swallows hard as he lets this sink in. “I guess you’re right. I’m sorry I bothered you. I only wanted to… Never mind. I’ll get going. I have to get up early to go sign that contract. Not that you care.”

He shakes his head in disappointment as he walks away and I’m glad I don’t have anything solid in my hand other than Skippy’s leash or I might throw it at the back of his head. So I’m the one who doesn’t care? Ugh. Typical Houston and his endless psychological games.

Maybe I should have told him to walk away from the contract, but that would have meant admitting that he still has a strong hold over me. It also would have been the truth and the truth has never gotten me into trouble. In fact, the truth is something my previous relationship with Houston was sorely lacking.

Nevertheless, I don’t need to right the wrongs we made while we were together. I don’t need to tell Houston that the sight of him makes my throat dry and my stomach flutter. He doesn’t need to know that I still go to sleep with scenes from our life together playing on repeat in my mind. Or that sometimes I wake up with his name tumbling from my lips, the remnants of dreams where he never left and nightmares where he hovers just out of reach.

Before Wednesday, the last time I had seen Houston was the day after he met me at the Planned Parenthood clinic. I didn’t ask him to come, and I don’t know how he found the date and time of my appointment, but he was there when we pulled into the parking lot. Lisa, a girl from my Social Inequality class whom I’d had coffee with a couple of times, had graciously agreed to take me to the clinic. Tone awoke to the heavy panting of a golden retriever in his face as he lay curled up on the sand of the Santa Monica Beach, with his goose down blanket and leather Polo coat. Tone spent his first night in Los Angeles sleeping away his past against the back drop of the Pacific Ocean. Watching the waves break, Tone contemplated the life in the hood he’d left behind and the new life ahead he wanted to create for himself. 

“Franky! Franky! Get over here! You don’t know that man. I’m so sorry about that, Franky is a little overly friendly,” a female voice said as Tone strained to adjust his eyes against the glaring sun. The retriever was licking Tone’s hand as he moved to position himself and get a better look at the beauty behind the voice. Sitting straight up, the woman’s crotch was almost directly in front of his face. Through the thin white material of her shorts, he could make out the outline of her puffy pussy lips. It was obvious that she was not wearing any panties. Her legs were well built and tan, displaying signs of past athleticism. Her feet were bare and her toes French pedicured. Her ankle bore a single silver designer bracelet, with a matching silver ring around her pinkie toe. Moving up past her shorts, she was a little thick in the waist, but in a sexy way. Her belly button was pierced with a diamond stud. A pair of succulent thirty-six double D tits hung low, right above her belly button in a white sports bra. Her face was natural, free from any makeup, with full juicy lips and piercing blue eyes. Her long blonde hair flowed down to the middle of her back. 

“Don’t worry about Franky; he’s just a playful little guy, aren’t ya!” Tone said playfully, grabbing the blue rubber ball that had rolled over to the area where he had been sleeping. Upon Tone grabbing the ball, Franky went crazy, jumping up and down, wagging his tail and barking. Tossing the ball towards the ocean, Franky took off clumsily to go fetch it. 

“How are you doing this morning? I’m Tone,” he said holding out his hand to greet her. She extended her hand squeezing his fingers. Her hand was soft and her fingers manicured. Taking in her full beauty, Tone could see that she was a mature woman, probably in her mid-forty’s, but very attractive. Older women had always been Tone’s thing. He didn’t like to waste much time with women his own age, because they usually didn’t know what they wanted and liked to play too many games.

“Earthy-crunchy girl” was the name he’d made up to tease Faith with when he was young and stupid. He felt bad about that. A little. 

However, Faith had no problem expressing what she thought of him—a shallow, animal-eating, fast-car-loving-mucking-up-the-environment jerk. 

Ah, the memories came tumbling back.

**My thoughts**

What could be more perfect than finding love on a tropical beach? These five romance writers got together to create their own little slice of paradise, taking place on St. Thomas. Each one featured her own set of characters, finding their way again in love and life, within a span of a few days to a couple of weeks on the island. The characters and the general framework do overlap from story to story, so you will see "familiar faces" throughout. You will also recognize a couple of major incidents, such as the big storm.

I felt like the stories got stronger as the book went on, and I found myself liking each subsequent story more than the previous one. I am not a fan of regency romances, but was entertained by the middle story "In Her Dreams," mostly because it was a writer essentially falling into one of her own plots. I felt like the last two stories, "Poseidon's Strength" and "A Pirate's Vacation" felt like the most real of the collection. Or else I am just a sucker for old flames and old friends finding each other again. 

Each one of these stories could be further developed, taking the characters forward into their lives after the storm. For the one where characters find each other again, it could be fun to have more stories about their past. They wouldn't work for this collection, but perhaps some of these characters will make an appearance elsewhere at some point. Quick summer read.

“Unselfish? Sure I am.” He went around to open her door.

She slid out of the truck. “Considerate. You’re not considerate enough to try to help us out. Your ego may be involved because you’re competitive. But not considerate or unselfish.”

He grabbed her hand, turned her to face him. She’d been sassing him with those pink lips for a few days now, and a man could only take so much.

He kissed her, long and slow and sweet, taking his time since she didn’t protest. She felt better than he remembered, even in his wildest fantasies, which he’d had plenty of concerning her.
